- Enables Customers to Meet Business Applications’ Service Levels with New HiCommand Business and Application Modules and New Performance-boosted Thunder 9585V

Sydney, AUSTRALIA – May 5, 2004 – Hitachi Data Systems Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT), today announced the industry’s first Application Optimised Storage Solutions, which combine HiCommand® business and application modules with legendary high performance/high availability Hitachi storage systems. This combination enables customers to precisely match business application requirements to Hitachi storage system attributes (performance, availability, and data value), leveraging the application-centric management capabilities of the HiCommand Storage Area Management Suite.

Specifically, today’s announcements include the latest version of HiCommand Storage Services Manager, an integral part of the HiCommand Storage Area Management Suite, HiCommand Path Provisioning, HiCommand QoS for Sybase, HiCommand Tuning Manager 3.3, and the performance-boosted Thunder 9585V ultra high-end modular storage system.

"While data lifecycle management can help companies lower cost and improve margin, greater gains will come from leveraging information to improve business performance," said Mr John McArthur, Group Vice President of Storage Research at IDC. "Solutions, such as Hitachi Data Systems’ Application Optimised Storage, that match storage system performance, provisioning, and availability with business application requirements, will play a key role in helping storage administrators focus on information and business performance, while automating data management."

Hitachi Data Systems is uniquely qualified to deliver Application Optimised Storage Solutions through: a common set of management and software tools across the entire product line; the ability to manage business applications' service levels all the way to the storage device; high-performance, high-availability, highly scalable storage systems with extensive heterogeneous and secure, multi-protocol connectivity for massive consolidation and multi-tiered deployment.

“With our Application Optimised Storage Solutions customers can finally bridge the gap between business application needs and IT’s ability to precisely deliver service levels,” said Mr Michael Cremen, General Manager of Hitachi Data Systems Australia. “Our HiCommand software’s application-centric view enables a set service-level to ensure applications are optimised to deliver the greatest business value. Hitachi’s leading hardware and software storage systems provide the supporting foundation with a range of products which enable customers to deploy storage according to the application’s performance, availability, and cost requirements.”

HiCommand Storage Services Manager 3.1
Hitachi Data Systems’ HiCommand Storage Services Manager software, auto-discovers the storage infrastructure and illuminates the path from each application through the SAN to the storage system – providing end-to-end capacity and performance management. The latest version boasts new capabilities for efficiently and securely managing enterprise storage networks – and new modules to enhance “path provisioning” capabilities and to help ensure the availability and performance of Sybase® Adaptive Server Enterprise in SAN environments.

HiCommand Path Provisioning
HiCommand Path Provisioning, now generally available, offers intelligent capabilities that automate the end-to-end provisioning of hosts, SAN switches and disk systems, speeding the deployment of new applications and ensuring mission critical applications have the storage required to deliver true business value. Using SmartGuide™ technology HiCommand Path Provisioning leverages the common knowledge base of application-to-LUN connectivity and dependency information to provide rules and filters that minimise mistakes, and ensure provisioning operations adhere to unique IT requirements set by business needs. HiCommand Path Provisioning is qualified on Hitachi storage systems, Sun StorEdge™ 9900 series storage systems, EMC Symmetrix®, Symmetrix DMX™, and CLARiiON®, LSI Logic-based arrays, and Brocade SilkWorm® SAN switches.

HiCommand QoS for Sybase
HiCommand QoS for Sybase joins the other already available application modules – HiCommand QoS for Microsoft Exchange, Oracle and File Servers. This module automatically discovers Sybase instances, databases, database files, and tables and graphically depicts the dependencies of these Sybase elements on the supporting SAN infrastructure. The path that each Sybase element takes from the application to the spindle is represented in a single, integrated view. Administrators can leverage these powerful dependency management capabilities with real-time performance monitoring to predict the impact of planned and unplanned SAN downtime on Sybase applications, and determine where in the SAN “stack” performance is being impacted. HiCommand QoS for Sybase also extends HiCommand Storage Services Manager’s complete foundation of capacity management, role-based security, reporting, event management, and policy-based automation capabilities to this leading relational database platform.

HiCommand Tuning Manager 3.3
HiCommand Tuning Manager is an automated, intelligent, and path-aware storage resource management tool that monitors, analyses, and reviews the performance and capacity of storage network resources from the application to the storage device -- providing detailed, in-depth resource management and forecasting for Hitachi Lightning 9900™ V Series Thunder 9500™ V Series and Sun StorEdge 9900 series systems. The latest version includes a new capability to monitor and manage the performance and capacity service levels of Microsoft® SQL Server™.
