VIRTUAL EVENT - Tuesday, June 16 - Registrations Open

Nortel has launched an out-of-the-box Hot Desking application that allows any company to give their staff single-number communications from any device and any number – a phone, mobile, softphone or smartphone, a meeting room, customer premise, hotel or home number.

The application is designed to run on any IT environment as part of Nortel’s vendor-agnostic Agile Communications Environment (ACE) software platform, announced earlier this year.

The immediate benefit of the technology is cost savings through the optimisation of a company’s existing IT environment, and a rapid return on investment as advanced unified communications functionality is deployed using the current infrastructure.

“Optimisation of IT resources is a key part of any CIO’s agenda in 2009,” says Kirsten Gilbertson, Leader, Emerging Technologies, Emerging Markets, Nortel. “What we’re addressing with ACE is the question of how you can leverage your existing investment to address, improve or innovate new business processes.

“One of the fundamental steps in achieving application innovation is to recognise that human delays slow business processes and that this costs enterprises real money,” says Gilbertson. “By decreasing or eliminating these human delays, you can experience a significant and positive transformation by accelerating ‘time to X’ time to decision, to revenue, to service, to support, to product – and by delivering increased business agility, accuracy, service velocity and business productivity.”

ACE is a platform that enables organisations to integrate existing multi-vendor communications infrastructure into business applications. The benefit of ACE is that it facilitates communication: it has the ability to look at a person’s location, presence and availability, compare that with the communications preferences of that person, and then initiate the most effective communication route to reach them. For example, if a person is on the phone, and the person’s preference was to receive an instant message from the caller, ACE will trigger this automatically.

Nortel’s Hot Desking solution, delivered by the ACE platform, provides the user with a simple, customisable web interface to temporarily assign any phone as the primary business phone, effectively providing a one-number service. Any incoming call to the user’s business phone number is automatically re-routed to the assigned hot desk phone. The hot desk phone can be any phone: internal or external, desk phone or mobile phone. The user can also initiate outbound calls through the web interface.

The version of Hot Desking shipping today is fully compatible with IBM Sametime environments, Microsoft Office Communication Server platforms and Cisco CallManager IP telephony systems. Compatibility with Avaya IP telephony will be added later this year.
