PayPal reveals developer program

Online payments company plans to release a tiered channel program and certifications in July

Online payment service provider, PayPal, has unwrapped a new certified developer and partner program that aims to make it easier to supply online payment services.

Global head of alliances and vertical markets, Glenn Lim, said PayPal had experienced exponential growth over the last few years and now has its sights set on targeting non-traditional retail environments. PayPal’s non-related Ebay operations make up about 53 per cent of its overall business.

Part of the aim with the new program is to help make e-commerce more accessible and tap into new vertical markets such as non-profit organisations, education and government. It has set up two microsites for the charity and education sector, which features access to the developer community.

“What we’ve found, especially in the US is that the non-related Ebay business, has relied a lot on independent developers to build their sites, especially in the SMB space,” he said.

PayPal is after web integrators and solution partners that have a web application with a payment component, Lim said. It has already partnered up with organisations like Civica, which provides an application in the local government sector and Bear Solutions, which offers a payment system for students in campuses.

The company is also partnering up with services provider, Blackbaud to help launch a low-cost service called BlackbaudNow in July. It will allow small non-profit organisations to build a website with PayPal payment processing features, so they can accept online donations.

PayPal also has plans in the pipeline to release a tiered channel program and certifications in July.

“As soon as a partner gets certified they move up in our certified developer directory,” he said. “We’re going to be providing the developer community everything they need to get up to speed, not only on PayPal and our new products, but also on the payments industry in general.”
