Fluke Networks Expands its Distributed Network Analysis Offering with Application Performance Monitoring

 • 12 December, 2003 11:28

SuperAgent Application Response Time Analyzer maximizes returns from critical business applications

Sydney, December 12, 2003- Fluke Networks announces the addition of application performance monitoring to its suite of distributed network analysis solutions. The SuperAgent application response time analyzer reports end-to-end performance by application, user, or server, providing network engineers with an efficient way to monitor and troubleshoot performance issues before they negatively impact the availability of critical business applications.

Application performance is a growing problem for today’s on-demand enterprises. According to recently published figures, over 75% of companies polled with revenues exceeding $1 billion experienced at least a moderate impact on employee productivity, team productivity and customer service resulting from application performance degradation. More than 35% of respondents delayed the launch of new applications due to concerns about performance. As a result, IT initiatives are demanding more focus on business metrics such as application response times.

“Fluke Networks is responding to the need for application performance understanding by adding SuperAgent to our line of distributed network analysis solutions,” said Mark Mullins, marketing manager of distributed network analysis solutions at Fluke Networks. “SuperAgent allows network engineers to speed the troubleshooting process by determining the source of the problem before any team or tool is dispatched. Whether the application or the network is the cause of the problem, we now have the perfect remedy.”

Application monitoring as a first call to action
Debugging applications problems in the past has typically been done with protocol analyzers, which require a high degree of user sophistication, and can only monitor for very short periods of time, typically a few minutes. Newer solutions provide better answers but require time-consuming deployment of agents throughout the network. SuperAgent can be installed in minutes and allows network engineers to immediately isolate performance problems to the network, server or application – from a single point on the network.

Properly identifying the source of the problem is sometimes enough to solve an application-related bottleneck, but more often a problem must be analyzed for greater detail. SuperAgent can drill down to the specific user, server or application causing the problem. If a network problem is indicated, Fluke Networks OptiView™ Network Analysis Solution, which combines active discovery, protocol analysis and RMON2 statistics for a complete picture of network performance, can be used to quickly isolate the problem to a specific device or link.

“SuperAgent is a natural complement to Fluke Networks' OptiView Network Analysis Solutions," said Dennis Drogseth, vice president, Enterprise Management Associates. "While OptiView has been focused on troubleshooting network performance, SuperAgent offers efficient oversight into application performance issues, helping to pinpoint where and how they may be impacted by either network, systems, or the applications themselves. Moreover, SuperAgent is an excellent fit for Fluke Networks. The product's ease of deployment, ease of use, and ease of administration are also valuable characteristics of the OptiView family. Through the integration of SuperAgent into its portfolio, Fluke Networks is making astute, step-by-step progress towards offering more comprehensive, infrastructure performance management without forcing customers to invest in complex, costly and hard-to-use solutions.”

Application monitoring made easy and profitable
SuperAgent separates itself from other response time solutions by quickly gathering in-depth data for any TCP application – such as those from SAP, Oracle and Citrix – without distributed agents. By collecting performance data at the switch, SuperAgent can measure response times for server-to-server communications – essential for diagnosing performance issues in complex multi-tier environments. SuperAgent automatically calculates baselines and thresholds to help identify potential problems and reveal new opportunities for optimization.
