HP ProCurve Launches PoE+ Gigabit Ethernet Switches

 • 18 March, 2009 18:10

HP ProCurve has today announced the ProCurve 2910 series of gigabit Ethernet switches, designed to help businesses reduce energy consumption while addressing the high-performance demands of bandwidth-intensive applications, such as unified communications, network storage, video streaming, and business critical databases.

The 2910 series is designed for deployment at the edge of enterprise networks, and for use in branch office networks. Four different 2910 models are available, with support for 10G Ethernet available via an optional expansion module.

The new switch models are some of the industry’s first to include PoE+ (Power-over-Ethernet Plus). PoE+ allows devices to be powered via their Ethernet connection, and is capable of delivering higher levels of power compared to the original PoE standard. PoE+ makes it possible for a wider range of devices to be powered directly by the network, such as IP security cameras supporting pan tilt and zoom.

Gurkirat Singh, HP ProCurve Country Manager South Pacific commented, “Energy efficiency is a high priority for many organisations, so we have designed our latest switches to be extremely energy efficient, and include management tools to help IT departments better understand and control energy use for their network infrastructure. Power over Ethernet Plus makes it possible to greatly simplify office cabling and wiring, by allowing a much wider range of devices to be powered directly from the network.”

In addition, the ProCurve 2910 has received the Miercom Certified Green Distinction Award. Designed to reduce power consumption, the ProCurve 2910 uses 23% less energy when compared to the industry average, based on typical usage.(1)

The new switches support HP ProCurve’s Adaptive Networks vision, making it easy for businesses to reduce ongoing support costs, while rapidly adapting to the changing needs of their users, and business applications. They are standards-based and offer interoperability in multi-vendor network environments.
