Palm tries enterprise

Palm extended its reach into the enterprise market recently with a $US264 million deal to acquire Extended Systems, which makes middleware software that ties mobile devices such as Palm's handhelds, Microsoft's Pocket PCs and keyboard-equipped BlackBerry pagers to back-office systems.

Palm said the acquisition of Extended Systems is part of an enterprise push aimed at helping the handheld maker move beyond its historical focus on serving individual end users. Palm is now looking to provide support for multiple operating systems in an enterprise infrastructure.

Extended Systems' product line includes mobile data management software that let users synchronise their handheld computers with corporate systems, plus wireless connectivity tools, printing packages and client/server database software keyed to the handheld market.
