Software distributor Manaccom and antivirus vendor Trend Micro have reason to celebrate -- racking up $1 million worth of business.
This is a considerable achievement given that Trend Micro's PC-cillin antivirus software retails for just $89.95. Now, Trend Micro and Manaccom have collaborated to offer an academic version of the software to help consolidate the software's success in the market.
"We are often asked for an academic version," said Manaccom business development manager James Mackay. "There's a lot of interest from VARs who sell into education because the process of getting Norton's academic version is so complicated."
The new version of PC-cillin is available to all full-time equivalent students with appropriate ID and will retail for $59.95. However, instead of pre-purchase approval arrangements, resellers only need to fill out a card and return it to Manaccom after the sale.
"That way they can buy as many copies as they want, but they can't reorder the title until we get their cards," Mackay said.
The PC-cillin brand has been very successful for the distributor. Mackay hopes Manaccom will be able to build on the success to make it the number one antivirus title in Australia. PC-cillin 2002 already sits at the number two position, according to Inform figures.
"We have overtaken McAfee so I don't think there is any reason why we can't overtake Norton," he said. "The only thing they beat us on at the moment is OEM copies. I think we have the consumer mindset."
