Trouble in wireless land

Proxim is suing competitors Cisco Systems, 3Com, Intersil, SMC Networks, Symbol Technologies and Wayport, claiming they are infringing on three of its wireless local area network patents.

The actions were filed in the Federal District Courts of Boston and Delaware. Proxim says it owns patents for implementation techniques used in many wireless products that comply with IEEE 802.11b wireless standards.

Proxim is seeking a court injunction preventing the companies from using the patents and monetary damages unless the companies agree to license Proxim's patents. Other companies that use the 802.11b technology in products include Lucent Technologies, NetGear, Sony, Linksys Group, Apple Computer and Dell. None of the complainants commented on the lawsuit.
