Altiris Innovation Challenges the Projected $19.5 Billion Systems Management Market

 • 18 February, 2004 09:42

Sydney, Australia – Feb. 18, 2004 – Altiris, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATRS), a pioneer of IT lifecycle management solutions that help reduce the total cost of owning IT resources, today announced a redefinition of the systems management market by providing comprehensive IT lifecycle management with increased integration, enhanced security and groundbreaking usability to reduce the cost of cradle-to-grave IT asset ownership. IT organizations must find a way to deploy, track, manage and maximize the proliferation of technology. Altiris helps businesses reduce IT cost and complexity by providing active IT asset management, seamlessly integrated with client and server change and configuration management, all built on a single infrastructure.

According to IDC, the enterprise systems management market is expected to grow to $19.5 billion worldwide by 2007. The new Altiris® 6 infrastructure delivers a natively integrated solution for IT lifecycle management and has defined the market by helping companies dramatically reduce the complexity and cost of planning, deploying, managing and replacing IT investments.

Fred Broussard, senior analyst at IDC, said, “The market is evolving towards comprehensive IT management solutions that leverage a single repository and interface. Companies with the vision to provide comprehensive solutions raise the bar over single functional point solutions, as well as attract and retain PC and hardware partners, and Altiris 6 demonstrates Altiris' commitment towards that vision.”

Altiris has teamed with leading hardware manufacturers, like Hewlett Packard, Dell, and Fujitsu Siemens, to help IT organizations reduce the cost of owning and supporting hardware investments.

Walt Jurek, HP client management marketing manager, said, “Altiris pioneered comprehensive IT lifecycle management and has again raised the bar with version 6. HP and Altiris customers benefit from a better managed hardware platform resulting in reduced costs of IT asset ownership. Leading-edge HP hardware, including PCs, notebooks, thin clients, industry-standard servers and mobile devices, combined with co-developed HP/Altiris management tools provide customers with a total-managed platform.”

Components of IT lifecycle management have traditionally been addressed by various point solutions, provided by numerous vendors, ultimately resulting in IT management chaos underlined by escalating maintenance and training costs. True IT lifecycle management is only attainable with integrated hardware and software solutions that utilize a standard architecture and IT asset dataset.

Defining IT Lifecycle Management
Altiris software can be used for individual projects or tasks, or combined to provide a comprehensive cradle-to-grave management solution. Individual Altiris solutions for client and mobile, server and asset management plug into the Altiris 6 infrastructure based on a single management console and data repository. Altiris helps customers save money by eliminating disparate management tools and associated maintenance and training costs.

Active IT asset management
Altiris is unique in providing IT organizations with real-time, active IT asset management through seamless integration of configuration management and asset management repositories for a rapid return on investment. Changes to an IT environment made through Altiris solutions are automatically reconciled with the associated asset record. Altiris provides discovery and tracking of heterogeneous hardware and software, disconnected assets, network devices, contracts and leases. IT organizations can avoid maintenance payments on unused technologies while assuring license compliance and lease returns for cost optimization. Altiris help desk software leverages integrated asset data and enables remote repair for ITIL-compliant incident management and to help achieve service level agreements.

Client and mobile management
Altiris provides the broadest set of integrated client and mobile manageability and includes unique features like integrated patch management, PC data and settings migration, PC backup and recovery, and software packaging. Leading analysts claim that, for the average enterprise, the cost of the PC and client operating system represents a small part of the overall TCO, generally 20 to 30 percent. The remaining 70 to 80 percent of the costs stem from post-purchase management and support. Altiris client and mobile management solutions automate management and support tasks to help reduce overall TCO. Streamlining management allows IT organizations to focus on proactive tasks like patch management or hardware or OS migrations to promote maximum client security and productivity.

Server management
Designed to simplify the entire server lifecycle, Altiris solutions provide deployment, management and monitoring functions from a centralized console. Altiris helps automate operations, improve system availability and reduce overall infrastructure costs.

“Information technology has evolved dramatically over the last 30 years, and with each new platform, mainframe, mini-computer, UNIX, Windows or Linux, new management vendors have assumed leadership positions,” said Geoff Masters, Vice President, Altiris Asia Pacific. “As industry-standard hardware has dropped in cost, Altiris has pioneered IT lifecycle management to reduce the cost of buying systems management software. Customers don’t want to buy $6000 worth of software to manage a $1500 server. Enterprise IT environments today are increasingly heterogeneous and require compatible management solutions. In addition to new demands like patch management, market factors have created a proliferation of management tools. Altiris technology simplifies management through a tightly integrated, comprehensive solution that manages the leading platforms and scales to provide manageability that integrates with and extends existing IT investments.”

Software packaging and application management
With the addition of Wise Solutions, Altiris can now leverage the leading enterprise application management solutions across its client and server management capabilities including application packaging and software conflict analysis and resolution.
