Intel aims Itanium 2 at high-end server market

Intel launched the second version of its Itanium processor this week, trying once more to carve out a business for itself in the lucrative high-end workstation and server market.

At least 20 vendors will offer Itanium 2 systems in the coming weeks and months, including Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Unisys and Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Intel officials said. Operating systems including Microsoft's Windows, Hewlett-Packard's HP-UX, and Red Hat Linux are also being rolled out, along with enterprise software products from Oracle, BEA Systems, SAP AG and others.

Itanium 2 processors will feature 3 MB and 1.5 MB of integrated L3 cache and 1GHz and 900MHz frequency speeds at prices ranging from $US1338 to $4226
