Hostworks aims for Q4

ASX-listed Web hosting company Hostworks expects the six months to December 31 to incur a small loss, but is confident a market turnaround will see it achieve its goal of profitability by the end of the financial year. In an ASX announcement in July, the Adelaide-based Web hosting specialist predicted the current financial year would bring the company into profitability, but a move to expand the company's sales capabilities has dampened business over the last few months. In an address to shareholders, Hostworks chairman David Archer said that despite the events of September 11 and the distraction of the upcoming Federal election, the company is "proceeding satisfactorily". He expects a loss of around $1.3 million for the first six months of the financial year, followed by month-on-month profits for the second half.

Sun updates Solaris

Sun Microsystems has released the latest update to its Solaris 8 operating system, including a limited-use version of the iPlanet Application Server and more flexible partitioning tools. Solaris 8 10/01 will be available via a free download for systems with eight or less CPUs or with a $US75 media kit. The update will include a limited-licence version of the iPlanet application server, allowing users to test programs on it and decide if they want to pay for a full licence and roll out the software.

Dell the reseller?

Dell Computer and EMC have agreed to a five-year strategic deal in which Dell will sell EMC's mid-range storage products. Under the agreement, Dell and EMC said they will co-brand EMC's Clariion line of enterprise storage systems. Financial terms weren't disclosed. The two companies have also agreed to work together to promote EMC's higher-end Symmetrix line of storage systems and software. Dell and EMC will also look for opportunities to use Dell's procurement and manufacturing capabilities in the production of EMC Clariion products.
