ScanSoft and Unified Communications Power New Speech Service for SingTel, Asia's Leading Communications Company

Singapore, February 18, 2004 -- ScanSoft, Inc. (Nasdaq: SSFT), the leading supplier of speech and imaging solutions, and Unified Communications (UC), the leading provider of proprietary telecommunication solutions in Asia, today announced the official launch of OneVoice, the voice portal application for Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel). OneVoice is a speech-activated service that uses SpeechWorks® speech recognition and text-to-speech from ScanSoft to enable SingTel subscribers to dial their personal contacts or public establishments, access useful information and carry out their personal information management.

By dialing *988 (using SingTel mobile line) or *6988 (using SingTel fixed line), customers can access their personal address book, a public address book, calendar and a range of information services using simple speech commands. Users let their voice do the dialing to reach their family or friends by saying a name already stored in their personal address book or web-based contact lists. Users can also request sports and lottery results, download ringtones, picture messages and logos, utilize location-based services to find the nearest amenities and recommended food outlets.

Mr Terence Lai, SingTel’s Deputy Director (Consumer Products – Fixed), said: “SingTel is offering its customers greater choice and convenience to access information through our fixed line and mobile services. Through OneVoice, they can simply use voice commands to facilitate their access to information rather than try to navigate through a touch tone menu of options or scroll through an address book on their cell phone.”

Some of the benefits SingTel customers enjoy with this service include the convenience of accessing their entire personal address book, calendar events and task list from a single system. Registration is also hassle-free. Customers simply dial in from a mobile or fixed line and register for an account instantly.

“We are thrilled that SingTel has taken the step towards introducing speech to their array of services,” said Peter Chidiac, Regional Director (AP), ScanSoft. “As a market leader in Asia’s telecommunications space, SingTel is setting a high precedence for other companies. We look forward to working closely with SingTel to introduce additional speech applications to its customers in the future.”

ScanSoft worked with partner Unified Communications to develop the OneVoice system. OneVoice utilizes ScanSoft’s speech recognition and text-to-speech (TTS) software and relies on Unified Communications’ data synchronisation module to tie into SingTel’s existing Web infrastructure to manage and synchronized users’ personal information such as address books and calendars. Users can access consolidated information from the website using their phones and simple voice commands and listen to the information via a natural sounding synthesized voice. SingTel participated in ScanSoft’s Market Accelerator Program™ to learn best practices in introducing a speech service.

“We are pleased to partner with ScanSoft to bring this service to SingTel customers,” commented Mr. Wong Tze Leng, CEO of Unified Communications. “The voice portal application provides greater convenience for SingTel users as it integrates with web portals to enable users to access the service via web.”
