NComputing X550

The X550 desktop virtualisation kit aims to deliver a rich multimedia computing experience to five users on one PC, and with a second X550 kit, can connect up to 11 sharing a single PC. The NComputing solution is based on the idea that today’s PCs are so powerful that the vast majority of applications only use a small fraction of the computer’s capacity. Each X550 unit includes five NComputing XD2 access devices, a PCI plug-in card and the vSpace virtualisation software. The efficient X550 has also been designed to deliver rich multimedia and full-screen video to users. Each access device uses one watt of electricity, compared to 110 for a standalone PC, NComputing claims. The appliance measures 119mm x 82mm x 27mm and accesses power via the PCI card using a Cat 5 or 6 cable. A green LED at the front of the unit displays power and connectivity. The X550 can run on either Windows or Linux-based systems and supports most applications including email, Web browsers, media players, office suites and multimedia.
