Improved self-service capability for MBF members and improved on line access for health providers

<p>Novell has just completed a major overhaul of MBF Australia Limited’s (MBF) secure identity management system, replacing the incumbent IBM software with Novell’s own eDirectory, iChain and DirXML infrastructure.</p>
<p>The Novell upgrade provides improved self-service capability for MBF’s 800,000 members when they connect to the health insurer’s website, www.mbf.com.au.</p>
<p>The new identity management and authentication system also enables health providers to complete member eligibility checks securely over the Internet.</p>
<p>Novell’s solution simplifies management and allows for easier integration with backend applications.</p>
<p>MBF chief information officer, Peter Lavender, said the system overhaul is helping MBF to continue its proud record of improving customer service, in this case, by providing members with even more efficient self-service methods online.</p>
<p>“Our members enjoy the self-service options that allow them to conduct some important aspects of membership from the comfort of their own home,” Mr Lavender said.</p>
<p>“This new system will ensure that their experience is a positive one. From an in-house perspective, the great benefit is being able to integrate future applications, no matter what platform or product, into the identity management solution. Our previous system didn’t allow this level of integration.”</p>
<p>General Manager of Novell Australia and New Zealand, David Lenz, said MBF’s decision to go with Novell was indicative of the increasing market interest in their secure identity management systems.</p>
<p>“MBF is one of many large organisations that are currently seeing the benefits of putting a Novell identity management system in place. Many organisations want to increase their security without locking their information down and making it difficult to share. By developing a responsible identity management system you’re able to give the right individuals access to the right information, at the right time,” said Mr Lenz.</p>
<p>The new MBF system comprises eDirectory as the core storage vault for user attributes while front-end security is provided by Novell iChain. iChain provides identity-based web security services that control access to application and network resources across technical and vendor boundaries – in MBF’s case both the member and provider sites are BEA applications. iChain is built on a proxy architecture which separates security from individual applications and web servers. This both vastly improves security and significantly enhances productivity in the development of eBusiness applications.</p>
