Nortel Launches Next-Generation Unified Communications Platform In Australia

Delivering Communications-Enabled Applications Across Multivendor Environments

Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT] has announced the Australian availability of its next-generation software platform that enables easy integration of unified communications functionality like click-to-call, video conferencing and presence to almost any business environment.

Nortel’s Agile Communication Environment – based on open-standard Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and open standard web-services – allows companies to deploy advanced communications technologies like unified communications and CEAs without locking themselves into proprietary solutions from any one vendor either at the desktop or in the infrastructure.

The flexibility of the Nortel Agile Communication Environment also delivers new unified communications functionality without having to invest in new PBX and video communications and provides integration among multi-vendor communication environments, avoiding the costs inherent in deploying a single vendor technology.

“Nortel’s Agile Communication Environment defines what is possible for next-generation communications,” says Kirsten Gilbertson, leader, Next Generation Unified Networks, Nortel, Asia “The Agile Communication Environment releases companies from being restricted to a vendor’s equipment or enterprise network by enabling communications applications to run as web services across almost any network environment. This increases productivity, drives network efficiencies and saves money.”

Using software plug-ins or ‘adapters’, Nortel’s Agile Communication Environment technology can also directly capture communication functionality from a company’s voice, video and data network integrating it into a company’s core business processes and supporting applications such as a unified communications platform from any of the leading desk-top vendors.

“The ability for Nortel’s Agile Communication Environment platform to integrate existing communications systems functionality into core business processes and applications is a unique differentiator in a market that is still populated by proprietary solutions from multiple vendors,” say Gilbertson. “It takes customers a step beyond what is possible today by linking their communication systems with their business applications and processes, driving faster return on investment, improved productivity and customer satisfaction along with lower costs for their unified communications deployments.”

“Take a typical delivery company for example,” adds Gilbertson. “With its current separate communications and vehicle management systems, it can give its customers a four or five hour window for when their goods would arrive. With the Agile Communication Environment, we can link the two systems and use an audio call or IM or SMS to automatically send a message to the customer when the vehicle is five kilometres away.”

The key value of the solution is that it enables human-latency to be removed from the communications process, speeding the decision cycle and improving response times which provide critical competitive differentiation for companies. In addition to an 18 percent increase in productivity, unified communications offers a return of 178 percent, according to Nortel’s ROI calculator.

A September 2008 update of Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for unified communications, positioned Nortel in the leader quadrant in this market space for the fourth year in a row.

Nortel is planning an aggressive development schedule for its Agile Communication Environment platform, with regular updates released every 12 weeks following general availability in mid-November. The first release supports, Nortel CS1000, MCS5100, AS5200, Cisco’s Call Manager IP Telephony and Tandberg videoconferencing hardware. Other vendors’ adaptors can also be made available rapidly.
