Lucent cuts more jobs

Lucent Technologies last week posted a $US1.89 billion loss for its third quarter and said it will cut 15,000 to 20,000 more employees in an effort to become profitable. The company said it would take a $7 billion to $9 billion charge in the fourth quarter related to job and product cuts and asset write-offs.

LAN runs SMB Leaders as reseller incentiveFollowing last year's success, LAN Systems is again running its Small Medium Business Leaders program to reward tier resellers that buy Cisco equipment. Running from June 1 and September 30, the program has given the distributor access to a myriad of new resellers according to Nick Verykios, general manager and marketing director of LAN Systems. In turn, he said it provides dealers with full support and the confidence to promote and install Cisco's range.

3Com restyles U.S. channel program

3Com has announced a restyling of its US channel partner program and has added a program devoted to wireless networking hardware.

Mirroring the structure of its international channel partner program, 3Com's US Focus program will have a three-tier structure. Members will be designated as Gold, Silver or Bronze, depending on their revenue commitment and level of technical certification.

The level determines the amount of internal resources, sales coverage, marketing support and education the partner will get.

LAN cannibalises PBX

Despite weathering the negative effects of current economic conditions, the LAN telephony market has proven itself generating real revenues and a growing installed base, according to US research group Cahners In-Stat. In-Stat feels LAN telephony is the future of enterprise voice. The group predicts revenues of over $US3 billion in LAN telephony handset, server and application sales by 2005.
