WD to make retail push

New staff appointment and product ranges launched by the vendor as it observes a big increase in retail storage uptake

Storage vendor, Western Digital, is making a concentrated push into the retail market with a new appointment and product range.

Damian Hodge has joined the vendor as its business development manager of branded products after six years as a buyer for Office Works. He joins country manager, Eric Chan, as WD’s second local employee.

“My appointment was made as a result of the huge growth that Western Digital has seen in the branded product market. In retail, without having somebody on the floor looking after that part of the business, there will be a lot of opportunities that we would miss out on,” Hodge said.

“Until now we haven’t had the manpower to be out there developing the business.”

WD has no plans to change its distribution setup, according to Hodge.

“Synnex is doing a fantastic job as our key retail distributor, so we see no reason to change that,” he said.

The vendor is also looking for new retail market opportunities for it to branch into with branded products. It has released the WD TV, a box that connects to a TV and streams music, video and photos from USB storage devices.

Hodge said the goal was to make the branded products as simple to use for the home user as possible. The WD TV was the first step into a new product range for the vendor.

“Historically, Western Digital hasn’t been the kind of vendor to put a product on the shelf and leave it there for too long," he said. "We’re going to try and innovate with design and technology and we’re certainly looking at other opportunities to branch into a new product line.”
