Polycom announces new video communications solutions and system enhancements for iPower and ViewStation

Release 6.0 for iPower and ViewStation extends latest video compression and encryption standards across group video offering and into installed base, enabling higher quality and secure video at lower bandwidths

SYDNEY, Australia - February 9th 2004 - Polycom®, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLCM), the world’s leader in video and voice conferencing, conference bridges, and integrated web collaboration solutions, has announced standards-based H.264 and AES encryption for its iPower and ViewStation FX, EX and VS4000 product lines and a new integrated multimedia conferencing solution. This solution, called the Polycom Media Centre, combines Polycom’s leading video conference systems with high-resolution displays, an advanced audio subsystem and elegant furniture for stylish conference centre design.

Polycom also announced an enhanced version of its industry-leading VS4000, rack-mounted video conferencing appliance for systems integrators and custom-room environments.

“Our Polycom Media Centre upgrade enhancements are designed to provide customers with elegant solutions and extended value for their existing investment in Polycom video conferencing technology,” said Jean-Francois Poulain, vice president and managing director, Polycom Asia Pacific. “Polycom is the only company that has delivered H.264 to existing customers without requiring a hardware upgrade, which supports our commitment to customer value and investment protection.”

“Delivering the quality and bandwidth-utilisation benefits of H.264 and the security benefits of AES encryption to the installed base of iPower and ViewStation customers is significant,” said Andrew Davis, managing partner of Wainhouse Research. “This creates, by far, the largest number of H.264 and AES capable systems in the industry, which helps to mainstream the technology and extend the benefits to a much larger population.”

The Polycom Media Centre represents the next step in integrated, packaged video conferencing solutions. Complementing the Polycom Executive Collection of sophisticated systems for high-profile briefing centres, the Polycom Media Centre is designed for elegant conference room settings. The solution combines a performance video conferencing system with large, XGA displays (single or dual 32’’) and a precision 270-watt sound system in a customised furniture cabinet to create a quality video meeting environment.

Offering flexibility, the Polycom Media Centre enables customers to combine the appropriate video conferencing system - iPower 9000, ViewStation FX, EX or VSX 7000 - with integrated solution packaging for a functional, but stylish, conferencing environment.

Release 6.0 for the iPower and ViewStation EX, FX and VS4000 products offers standards-based H.264 video, which delivers nearly twice the video quality over the same bandwidth connection, and an option for NIST-validated and FIPS-compliant AES encryption, which secures all conference information - audio, video and rich media content.

Offering fully interoperable H.264 and AES encryption across its group video conferencing systems, Release 6.0 includes all iPower models (iPower 9000, 900 and 600 systems), the new VSX 7000 and all ViewStation EX, FX, and VS4000 video systems. This software release will also provide complete interoperability with other video conferencing systems that are fully compliant to the ITU-T H.264 standard and fully compliant to the most current AES standard (ITU H.235 V3) for IP networks and H.233/H.234 for ISDN networks.

Polycom has also enhanced its industry-leading VS4000 group video conferencing appliance designed specifically for systems integrators and custom-room environments. Enhancements include:
· New, smaller form factor to easily fit into custom applications and conference room cabinets, carts and furniture
· Professional grade, standard BNC connectors for video I/O that enable integrators to “lock” camera and monitor connectors and quickly and easily create custom cables for any application
· Fully integrated PowerCam support through a single connector for PTZ control, camera power and integrated IR control for cleaner, simpler installations and one-stop shopping for the integrated video system
· Pre-configured cable for Polycom Vortex integration makes combining premium quality video system and installed-room audio quick and easy
· Extended API support with additional API commands and pre-validated commands for Crestron/AMX controllers to ensure simpler implementation

Release 6.0 will be available to Polycom’s installed base of ViewStation EX, FX and VS4000 and iPower 9000, 900 and 600 users and will ship on all new ViewStation and iPower systems by March 2004.
