TechAid in need of help for the disabled

Charity organisation TechAid to the Disabled (TAD) is calling out for a warehouse to carry on its outstanding work in assisting disabled Australians to reap the benefits of IT technology.

TAD operates Australia-wide and consists of a number of volunteers, many of them retired computer engineers, who are dedicated to the design, construction and provision of aids for people with disabilities.

TAD makes and supplies custom-designed aids, where commercial equipment is not suitable. It provides computers on loan, information on aids and technology, engineering and technically skilled persons, and carers, support and interest groups, to people with disabilities.

According to Alan McGregor, manager of the Computer Loans Service division at TAD, the Sydney operation is in need of office or storage space at a reduced cost in order to continue their work.

"We've been renting out part of the basement at the Royal Ryde Rehabilitation Centre for a very cheap rate, but in the next three to five years, the building is going to be knocked down," McGregor said.

"We also have a workshop in part of the P&O building in Glebe ,which was lent to us free of charge, but that building is going to be demolished in October.

"Ideally, we'd like to bring the Sydney operation under the one roof. If we're unable to secure a warehouse, an offsite storage area would also help us a lot."

McGregor said the organisation receives generous contributions from IT companies like IBM, Microsoft, KAZ Computer Services and the Australian Computer Society.

"We've received some generous hardware donations. The only products we are in need of are sound cards, CD drives and modems," he said.
