Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre Automates Network Changes with HP ProCurve

 • 17 October, 2008 17:00

HP ProCurve Networking today announced that the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre has implemented a ProCurve unified wired and wireless Gigabit Ethernet network solution. The network enables the Centre to deliver Internet services to thousands of exhibitors and visitors, and to easily manage the complexity of reconfiguring systems for more than 80 major exhibitions and 170 conferences held at the Centre each year.

The ProCurve adaptive network involves the deployment of more than 50 ProCurve Gigabit Ethernet switches in a large campus network and more than 80 ProCurve radio ports and several Wireless Edge Services Modules (WESM) for seamless wireless LAN (WLAN) access.

Ross Horlyck, Infrastructure Manager for the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, said, “With a packed schedule of national and international exhibitions and conferences throughout the year, we need a highly flexible network that is secure, reliable and easy-to-administer. Our network team is responsible for delivering Internet and data services to thousands of clients each year, many of them having very specific requirements.”

The Centre required maximum network flexibility for quick network configuration changes before each new exhibition or conference event. To meet this need, more than 2,000 network points supporting Power-over-Ethernet technology were installed in the exhibition and convention areas in a high availability design. ProCurve switches deployed include the ProCurve 5400 chassis switches, ProCurve 2524 and ProCurve 3500 switches.

The adaptive network architecture provides several virtual LANs. Building monitoring systems, retail point-of-sale devices, air-conditioning systems and intelligent signage devices are all connected into virtual networks. Separate virtual networks are used for public WLAN services and to deliver Ethernet bandwidth to clients who demand tailored Internet and data connectivity services. Network traffic in a major event at the Centre is typically spread across more than 200 active virtual LANs. The Centre has also implemented a sophisticated bandwidth management solution to allow them to bill their clients according to their connectivity and usage profile.

“Selling Internet services is now a profitable revenue stream for our organization. An external ISP used to provide Internet services to our clients. Service provisioning took a long time and when problems occurred, trouble-shooting was time-consuming. Thanks to ProCurve, we have been able to achieve enormously improved levels of network reliability and are now able to quickly provision services and trouble-shoot problems,” said Horlyck.

“Businesses today need foundations that can adapt to the changing needs of their users, applications and even business objectives. We are very happy to be the choice network solution provider to the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, and bring them reliable, secure and standards-based technologies that will support their own and their clients’ network and communications requirements,” said Gurkirat Singh, HP ProCurve Country Manager South Pacific.

Facility-wide Wireless LAN
The ProCurve solution which included a facility-wide WLAN is centrally managed by a ProCurve WESM solution. The ProCurve WLAN solution works in conjunction with an accounting system from Antlabs to provide on-demand wireless access. Users attempting to connect to the wireless hotspot are presented with a web page that outlines service costs before being allowed access. ProCurve WESM provides a totally automatic solution for radio management of all wireless network cells, monitoring and management of cell sizes, and mapping devices to the appropriate virtual LANs.

Central Network Management
ProCurve security and network management software, the ProCurve Identity Driven Manager (IDM) and the ProCurve Manager, further simplify network administration and trouble shooting. IDM allows sophisticated security and access control policies to be implemented across the network without requiring manual configuration of each device. ProCurve Manager continuously monitors the network and sends automatic alerts to the IT team when unusual events occur. Additionally, ProCurve’s virus throttling technology in the switches ensures security threats are detected and eliminated quickly.

Horlyck said, “We provide network services to three large buildings, including the exhibition hall which alone covers 2.5 hectares – about the size of five football fields. We have no control over the devices that an exhibitor might attach to the network. ProCurve has greatly improved our ability to provide network services to a large number of clients. It has delivered a highly secured network, with rock solid support backed by industry standards, and in-depth monitoring and trouble-shooting tools.”
