New solution simplifies secure wireless at affordable prices

Sydney. – July 6, 2004 – SonicWALL, Inc. (NASDAQ: SNWL), a leading provider of integrated security, productivity and mobility solutions, announced today the launch in the Australasian region of its new SonicWALL Distributed Wireless Solution, which enables secure, centrally-managed and cost-effective wireless network deployment for businesses of all sizes. SonicWALL’s new solution reduces the cost and complexity of network administration by eliminating the need for separate, parallel infrastructures to support wired and wireless security and productivity services.

SonicWALL’s Distributed Wireless Solution introduces integrated wired and wireless LAN security and productivity for medium and large networks through the use of new SonicPoint 802.11a/b/g satellite access points. The governing SonicWALL gateway appliance automatically discovers and configures and manages each SonicPoint, allowing users to roam across large areas while maintaining their sessions and security policies. The highly scalable solution is available across SonicWALL’s current generation of Internet security appliances including the TZ 170, PRO 2040, PRO 3060, PRO 4060, and the recently announced PRO 5060 Internet security appliance. Up to two wireless nodes are recommended for the TZ 170, while the gigabit class PRO 5060 can accommodate up to 128 networked SonicPoints.

The SonicPoint solution incorporates a number of powerful security features that simplify deployment while increasing security. These features include powerful local management, global management through SonicWALL’s award-winning Global Management System, wireless intrusion detection, rogue access point detection, wireless guest services, plus the ability to add gateway enforced anti-virus and end-point security, content filtering, and the recently announced Intrusion Prevention System.

“Wireless has changed the way we work, but network administrators are struggling to integrate wireless into their existing network security infrastructure,” said Richard Webb of international analyst firm Infonetics. “Until now, network administrators have had little or no option to provide this kind of total security enforcement throughout a building, especially with seamless roaming and centralized management, without expensive wireless switch equipment. SonicWALL’s new platform addresses end users’ need for ease of implementation, coupled with central management of their entire wired and wireless networks.”

“SonicWALL is currently the only vendor who has taken core network services, including firewall, VPN, content filtering, intrusion prevention services and now wireless LAN, and aggregated them all on a single network security platform,” said Joe Sykora, president of managed security services provider Fortress Network Security, a SonicWALL Gold Medallion channel partner. “SonicWALL plays really well in the integration space and provides exceptional ease of administration and lower total cost of ownership, both of which are of major importance to our end users. This is an excellent proof point for SonicWALL’s value innovation strategy. It offers us a high level of return on our network investment, and a deeper level of protection to our customers.”

The new solution is enabled through a new version of SonicOS, SonicOS 2.5 Enhanced, designed for SonicWALL’s latest generation of appliances. The SonicPoint satellite access point provides secure and scalable wireless coverage for any 802.11a/b/g client and supports IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet, allowing placement anywhere in the network. An optional 802.3af-compliant power injector automatically detects the presence of a SonicPoint and injects power into the Ethernet cable. Finally, an 802.11a/b/g dual band wireless card provides industry-leading data throughput at extended ranges with extremely high receive sensitivity and transmit power.

“By placing centralized wireless LAN management on the gateway, SonicWALL has once again pioneered a new approach to security,” said Tim Dickinson, SonicWALL’s Regional Sales Manager for Australia, New Zealand and Oceania. “The unique qualities of this solution lie in the simplicity of configuration and management and the integration of security and services for wired and wireless networks. Coupled with the availability of our new high-performance PRO 5060 security appliance later this month, the distributed wireless solution will provide a powerful productivity and mobility option to organizations of all sizes.”

Features of SonicWALL’s new Distributed Wireless Solution include:
Comprehensive security: total security enforcement is provided for both wired and wireless networks from a single gateway device. Network administrators can provide high levels of security by requiring enforced IPSec VPN connectivity to the WLAN for all wireless traffic.
Seamless wireless roaming: users can maintain secure access to the network while roaming from SonicPoint to SonicPoint.
Auto provisioning: the governing SonicWALL gateway appliance automatically discovers and configures each SonicPoint through the Ethernet interface.
Low cost of ownership: network administrators can avoid the excessive total cost of ownership involved in separately implementing and managing an expensive wireless-specific solution that runs in parallel to the wired network.
Scalability: network managers can extend their wireless coverage area by adding further SonicPoints to the network as needed.
Granular communication controls: network administrators are able to apply security and productivity policies to all wireless and wired traffic.
Dual-band rogue access point detection: allows network administrators to detect rogue access points on both 2.4 and 5 GHz spectrums, closing a significant security backdoor.
Wireless guest access: organizations can provide wireless guest Internet access through the auto-generation of guest accounts without compromising the integrity of the network. Guest accounts are configured and authenticated separately from the main network.
Supports current and future standards: the solution supports existing wireless security standards, including WEP, WPA and IPSec. Built-in support for AES encryption is provided to ease the transition to the future 802.11i standard.

The SonicPoint access points and components of the distributed wireless solution is available now through SonicWALL’s distributors – Renaissance in New Zealand and Dovetail, ACA Pacific and Lan 1 in Australia. US list price for the SonicPoint is US$774.
