Record notebook sales month for Acer

Acer has announced record notebook sales for January across Australia and New Zealand.

The company's figures show 112 per cent growth in shipments compared to January 2004. Acer Oceanic marketing director, Raymond Vardanega, suggested its broad mobility portfolio and strong channel support were the main reasons for the growth.

General manager of Acer channel sales, Greg Mikaelian, said retail (74 per cent growth) had slightly outperformed distribution (70 per cent) in terms of revenue growth for the past year.

He said the education sector had also contributed significantly with recent wins across Tasmania and Western Australia.

"November and December are especially strong for education sales," Mikaelian said.

Recently promoted from the similar sounding role of national channels manager, he said his new role involves management of the company's three paths to market - direct, retail and distribution.

He anticipated appointing staff to head these separate operations but did not specify when that might happen.

Acer distributes through Ingram Micro, IT Wholesale, Bluechip Infotech, HiTech Distribution in South Australia and CompuWholesale in Western Australia.

In December, Express Data was added as an outlet for its storage, server and networking. The vendor had already been dealing with the distributor's subsidiary, Express Online, for the past couple of years.

"They [Express Online] target small to medium business and are a key vehicle to take these products into that market," he said. "We believe this product set will be a big growth area for 2005."

Looking ahead to Q2, Mikaelian said Acer expects to announce a new LCD television as it attempts to establish a presence in the audio visual space.
