FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EMC, LEGATO SOFTWARE EACH GREW SHARE IN THIRD QUARTER STORAGE SOFTWARE MARKET

Market Leader EMC Extended Lead Over #2 VERITAS;
LEGATO Software Gained Share

Sydney - December 16, 2003 - EMC Corporation widened its lead as the world’s #1 provider of storage software by growing its market share to 26.1 per cent in the third quarter, outpacing the total market and the next three vendors, according to IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Storage Software tracker, released today. LEGATO Software, now a division of EMC, also grew its revenue share in both of its core markets: Backup & Recovery/Archive and Replication.

According to IDC’s data, the two companies together would have led the market with 30 per cent revenue share and grown at nearly twice the rate of the total storage software market in the third quarter. Combined, EMC and LEGATO would have gained share in every major software category, including Storage Resource Management (SRM), Backup and Recovery/Archive, and Replication.

Mark Lewis, EMC Executive Vice President of Open Software, said, “EMC software continues to gain momentum in the marketplace. Our information lifecycle management strategy is clearly resonating with customers eager to attack costs, increase productivity, address compliance concerns and align their information infrastructure with information value.”

David B. Wright, EMC Executive Vice President and President of EMC’s LEGATO Software division, said, “LEGATO increased its share in every applicable category as more and more customers are turning to our Information Management solutions. In particular, while our core backup, recovery and archive solutions fared well with increasing share, a major highlight was our growth in replication. Our overall growth demonstrates that our combination is seen positively by customers, given it occurred in the midst of our acquisition by EMC.”

EMC announced its agreement to acquire LEGATO on July 8, 2003, and the completion of the acquisition on October 21, 2003.
