Not just another pea in the pod: Toshiba releases a multi-purpose digital audio player

 • 29 July, 2005 15:42

Sydney, 29 July 2005: Toshiba (Australia) Pty Limited Information Systems Division (ISD) has introduced the ‘gigabeat’, a portable, full-colour, digital audio player that doubles as a hard disk drive for backing up files on the PC.

Offering the quality and design Toshiba is synonymous with, the silver pocket-sized gigabeat comes with a QVGA LCD colour screen for the display of album covers and photos. Available in 20GB, 40GB and 60GB, the gigabeat models offer more storage than most devices of this type while maintaining an easy to use interface.

The gigabeat is available for purchase on its own or as part of a bundled package with the Satellite M50, a new Toshiba notebook PC. Storing up to 15,000 music tracks, digital stills and PC files on the one device, the gigabeat is designed for both work and play.

Bringing its expertise in mobile computing to the personal music space, the Toshiba gigabeat features:

- 2.2 Inch QVGA LCD colour screen that displays downloaded album covers and digital photos in 264,000 colours and 240 x 320 resolution;

- Intuitive PLUSTOUCH sensor control, a plus-sign shape touch sensor, for smooth navigation with the slide of a finger;

- CD RipRec technology, a new and quick way of uploading music, that allows users to copy entire CDs directly into the gigabeat at the push of a button without the need to manually move tracks into another music library first; and

- gigabeat room management software for easy organisation and management of files on the gigabeat from the PC.

The digital photo album: audio slide shows

The Toshiba gigabeat has a 2.2 inch 240 x 320 pixel colour screen for the high-resolution display of album covers and digital stills. Photographs can be downloaded onto the gigabeat via the included ‘gigabeat room’ management software and viewed in widescreen format (horizontally) or portrait format (vertically). Users can also create music playlists and view slideshows to music.

The portable storage device: back-up for the PC

Having created hard drives for years, Toshiba takes the experience and puts it in the gigabeat. More than just a music player, the gigabeat is ideal for storing backup files from the PC, and transferring files between computers. Available in a comprehensive range of capacities and colours including – 20GB (in silver aluminium), 40GB (in champagne silver), and 60GB in (steel grey aluminium) – the gigabeat stores 5,000, 10,000 and 15,000 four-minute songs, respectively.

The jukebox: one-step music transfer

Unlike other music software which involves two steps for transferring files onto a device, the Toshiba ‘gigabeat room’ makes copying CDs and managing music and images effortless with a simple push of a ‘RipRec’ button built into the cradle.

Transferred files are automatically stored in a database and can be searched by category using ‘PLUSTOUCH’, a plus-sign sensor used to carry out the main operations of the device. JPEG images can be attached to individual songs or entire albums, providing jukebox-style visual cues during music searches.

The gigabeat offers rich stereo sounds that clearly bring out the sound of each instrument. With a selection of 28 equilisers, music-lovers can pre-set equiliser preference for each individual audio-track – from classical to jazz and hip-hop.

Suitable for frequent travellers, the gigabeat has up to 16 hours of battery life and is easy to recharge on the road – with a laptop’s USB port. Users no longer have to carry around additional adapters.

Pricing and availability
