IDC crowns Toshiba as Australia’s number one notebook vendor

 • 18 December, 2003 12:28

Toshiba (Australia) Pty. Limited, Information Systems Division (ISD), has reclaimed its lead as the number one notebook vendor in Australia, according to the latest figures from IDC. IDC released its final third quarter 2003 Australian PC figures last week, showing Toshiba with a 21.6 per cent market share of the notebook sector.

Toshiba, which specialises in mobile computing solutions, took fifth position in the Australian PC market overall with a 5.2 per cent share, demonstrating the importance and strength of the notebook market in Australia.

Toshiba scored particularly well in the corporate sector, holding more than a third of the notebook market share in the small business space (35.3 per cent), and retaining market leadership in the corporate space overall, with a 24.3 per cent stake.

“The IDC figures demonstrate that Toshiba’s focus on mobile computing is right in tune with changing corporate and consumer needs,” said Mark Whittard, National Marketing and Retail Business Manager, Toshiba ISD. “Since pioneering the notebook computer in 1985, our aim has always been to provide the best quality notebook across all markets, and set the standard for innovation excellence.”

As Toshiba is the only 100 per cent channel centric vendor in Australia, Mr Whittard also credited Toshiba’s reseller channel, for the results.

“The customer service and support provided by our channel partners really help to distinguish Toshiba in the industry. Their commitment to Toshiba and their dedication to answering individual customer requirements have again been key helping us achieve market leader status,” he said.

About Toshiba

Toshiba’s Information Systems Division (ISD) is a division of Toshiba (Australia) Pty Limited which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Toshiba Corporation, the seventh largest integrated manufacturer of electric and electronic equipment, with around 165,000 employees worldwide, and annual sales of over US$47 billion on a consolidated basis. With notebook market share of 24.3% (according to IDC’s Q3 2003 figures), Toshiba ISD is comfortably the Australian market share market leader.

Unique among vendors, Toshiba ISD specialises exclusively in mobile solutions and services and is also the only leading computer brand that is 100 per cent channel-centric. A global reputation for quality has been achieved through an R&D budget roughly equal to Australia’s total expenditure as a country in this area.

Toshiba pioneered the notebook market in 1985 and in recent years, Toshiba ISD extended its solutions offering for Australia and New Zealand with the inclusion of a range of projectors, Pocket PCs and personal storage products.
