KITBAG: What's new? Net-enabled printers

Kyocera FS 1800N & 3800N

All Kyocera Mita printers are Internet-enabled. However, while two of the printers - the 1800N and the 3800N - come standard with a network interface card, other models need a card to be installed that will allow remote printing and remote access control. The FS 1800N and FS 3800N support Novell Netware, Windows and Windows NT, Unix (TCP/IP), NetBEUI and AppleTalk.

Lexmark Optra C720

The C720 colour laser printer comes in three models, ranging up to the duplex-capable, high-capacity 720dn. The C720 can be connected to a network via an internal/external network adaptor for operation in Windows 95, 98, 2000, Me, NT, Unix, Linux, OS/2 and Macintosh environments, and can be combined with Lexmark's OptraImage 443 multifunction option, to enable colour copying, scanning and faxing.

HP LaserJet 4100

A high-performance workgroup mono laser printer for business environments, the LaserJet 4100 incorporates EVM (embedded virtual machine) technology that allows users to execute Java applications, making the printer a platform for interacting with e-services, mobile phones and handheld devices. Also, a smart chip print cartridge and EWS (embedded Web server) technology allow for remote printer management and ordering of supplies via the Internet.

Minolta-QMS 2200

Minolta-QMS uses its CrownView technology to create a HTML-based Web page that resides inside the printer. CrownView responds through an Internet browser and performs commands in real time, allowing users to view the printer's consumable and paper levels, check the jobs pending and printed, review memory configuration or other printer settings through the on-screen graphical user menu. When the printer requires attention, it notifies users via e-mail.
