Caprina's 16MB AR39 USB Drive is ideal for easy transportation of data, presentations and images. It handles hot plug-and-play via a USB port (Windows 98 requires a driver which is supplied), has password and comes with a lanyard and extension cable. The 16MB memory is the equivalent of twelve 3.5-inch floppys.

Iomega's Zip 750MB USB2.0 Drive sports 50x50x50 read/write/rewrite speed, making it suitable for SMB and personal data backup. It's both PC and Mac-compatible (750MB disks are now dual-format) and features a USB 2.0 data transfer rate of up to 8MB per second. The 750MB drive is currently available with USB connectivity and Firewire and internal ATAPI versions will be available in November.

It is distributed by Tech Pacific, Ingram Micro, Alloys International and DaisyTek and retails for $449 (inc GST). A 10-piece pack of 750MB disks cost $299; a 2-piece pack costs $64.

BenQ has released its internal 48x CD-Rewriter, the CRW4816P, boasting the fastest speed currently available. At full 48x write, 16x re-write and 48x read performance, it burns a full capacity 700Mb disk in less than three minutes. It offers internal IDE and is bundled with the latest version of Nero Burning software (version and Ahead Incd (version 3.28.1) that allows easy backup of the hard drive. The CRW4816P retails for $189 (inc GST).

BenQ simultaneously launched its external Mini CD-RW 2410MR, which pairs high burn rates with convenient portability. Using a USB 2.0 interface, the 2410MR offers 480MB per second data transfer rates. Weighing a mere 520 grams and the size of a standard novel (134x39x165mm), the 2410MR fits into a briefcase or handbag. It retails for $399 (inc GST).

CMS Peripherals

The ABSplus drive has been re-released in a MultiBay version to suit Dell and Compaq desktops and notebooks. The drive is bootable and offers disaster recovery support as well as being used as external storage with a data transfer rate of up to 480Mbps for USB2. The scheduler allows timed backups and FastSync will keep track of chosen files/folders to ensure data is up to date. It supports both PC and Mac, is available in PCMCIA, USB2 and FireWire and ranges in capacity from 20-60GB in portable to 80-160GB for desktop.

Reseller pricing is $760 (inc GST) for the 20GB portable; $890 for the 20GB MultiBay; and $760 for the 80GB desktop.

LaCie's new range of portable USB 2.0 desktop hard drives are ideal for storage-hungry applications such as digital audio or video. Available in capacities up to 200GB, the drives have a peak data transfer speed of 480Mbps. A combination of newly developed Hi-Speed USB 2.0 to IDE bridges with high-performance 7200rpm ATA100 disks means the LaCie d2 drives can deliver a sustained transfer rate of up to 28Mbps, compared with 16Mbps for most traditional USB 2.0 disks.

Without the necessity of cooling fans, LaCie d2 hard drives show a noise reduction of up to 50 per cent and pre-formatted the drives can be instantly hot-plugged while the computer is running. The drives cost $499 (ex GST) for 80GB, 7200rpm/2MB; $659 for 120GB, 7200rpm/2MB); and $959, 200GB 7200rpm/8MB. This includes a one-year warranty, cables and necessary software for Windows 98SE/2000/ME/XP and Mac OS 8.6 and above.


Linksys has released an easy-to-use 80-gigabyte network attached storage and print server - the EtherFast Instant GigaDrive. It provides solid data transfer for multiple client connections, while the 10/100 port automatically adjusts to the network's speed. It can also function as a standalone DHCP server for easy installation and an available second hard drive bay lets you add up to 120GB of storage. The unit comes with built-in disk utilities for backup, self test, scandisk and defrag.

Adaptec DuraStor 7320SS

Adaptec has introduced a new low-profile external storage subsystem featuring storage management, security and protection crucial for storage area networks (SANs). The Adaptec DuraStor 7320SS, a Fibre Channel-to-SCSI subsystem, features LUN (logical unit number) zoning for the highest level of SAN security and manageability. LUN zoning allows organisations to easily allocate storage for specific applications and servers while preventing overwrites. The DuraStor 7320SS is aimed at the mid-range storage market and is distributed by Digiland, Lan 1, Synnex Australia and Tech Pacific.

It retails for $23,450 (inc GST) without hard disk drives but inclusive of 1 FC controller and a one-year onsite warranty.

StorageTek has launched a network storage consolidation solution targeting medium-sized organisations. The SANplicity solution is a 400GB RAID configuration with tape library, switching and backup software. It delivers availability, manageability, scalability and secure networked storage at a price optimised for entry-level SAN environments. The solution marries industry leading products-StorageTek's D173 disk subsystem, SANtricity Storage Manager and L20 tape library, networked with Brocade SilkWorm 3200 Entry Fabric switches and Veritas Software's Netbackup server software. With SANplicity, customers are freed from complex legacy storage environments, giving them the ability to share storage across the organisation and to easily increase storage capacity when needed.

EMC has released its new Clariion CX400 networked storage system, the second member of EMC's next-generation Clariion CX family. The full 2-gigabit Clariion CX400 delivers 680 megabytes per second of cached bandwidth, a 20 per cent better ratio than its closest competitor, according to EMC. The CX400 shares a common architecture, components, Flare operating environment and software functionality (e.g. Navisphere, SnapView, MirrorView and Access Logix), with the CX600, while maintaining tight management integration with prior Clariion generations.
