Lenovo ThinkPad T61

The ThinkPad T61 is a 15.4-inch widescreen mobile workstation which features a top cover roll cage for durability and is designed to run cooler, quieter and more energy efficiently than previous models. Lenovo claims its Ultra Connect II wireless design helps to improve WWAN and WLAN 8.2011n performance, while its Nvidia Quadro FX 57OM graphics is certified to the open GL graphics GPU standard. The notebook comes with Intel Centrino Pro mobile technology. With Lenovo's new cooling system technology built-in, the notebook is quieter than previous models and up to 10 per cent cooler under intensive tasks, according to the vendor. For additional security, the T61 offers optional port disablement, 32-byte password protection, an integrated fingerprint reader and full disk encryption. Certified to run over 20 independent software vendor applications, the workstation is also certified for SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 and is supported by Lenovo's Help Center for hardware issues. The T61 can also run Red Hat and Turbo Linux operating systems.

Pioneer DreamBook Tough V10

This notebook weighs 2.2kg and is based on a fully ruggedised platform. Pioneer claims it combines high security, full wireless access, dual-mode notebook/Tablet PC use and a convenient interface that fulfils the notebook needs of users in severe environments. The DreamBook Tough V10 features TPM 1.2 (Trust Platform Module) and meets EAL 5+ and Smart Card criteria for physical security on administrator and remote access accounts. The notebook has passed a 100cm drop test 26 times and is MIL-SID-810F compliant. Its hard drive and LCD are shock mounted to absorb impact force. The drive is also protected by a GSensor that parks the hard disk reader for data/HDD protection, has been certified with a IP54 rating in water and dust proof tests, and has an Mg-Al alloy chassis. The V10 provides 3G and 3.5G connection, 802.11a/b/g wireless, Bluetooth 2.0 and gigabit LAN connectivity. There's also a Web cam, touchscreen and digitiser and a GPS.

Panasonic Toughbook CF19 Mk2

The CF19 Mk2 has been designed for use in extreme conditions and is powered by an Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo. It comes with 1GB of RAM expandable to 4GB and an 80GB SATA hard drive. The notebook has WLAN functionality using IEEE 802.11a/b/g standards and supports wireless data transfer at speeds of up to 54Mbps. An embedded 3G HSDPA module can be fitted into the Toughbook as an optional extra. Other options available include a GPS, fingerprint reader and smartcard reader, as well as the ability to install the notebook in a vehicle. Built with a magnesium alloy frame and specialised shock-absorbent damper encasing the hard drive, the CF19 Mk2 can withstand knocks, heavy vibrations and sharp temperature fluctuations while surviving falls from up to 90cm. The CF-19 Mk2 is certified to military standards MIL-STD-810F, MIL-STD-461E and IP54 rated (water and dust). The notebook features an integrated Trusted Platform module (TPM 1.2) chip.
