Emerson Network Power Sets Business-Friendly Framework For Meeting Government Mandate To Reduce Energy Consumption

<p>Emerson Network Power, a business of Emerson (NYSE:EMR) and the global leader in enabling Business-Critical Continuity™, will bring together some of the biggest names in Australian IT – Cisco, Dell and IBM – to help launch its world-first initiative to slash energy consumption in the data centre.</p>
<p>Emerson’s Energy Logic framework is a vendor-neutral roadmap that sets out 10 easy steps to reduce the amount of energy consumed in the data centre. It is particularly significant at a time when Australian companies are looking at ways to reduce their energy bills and comply with newly minted government regulations to become more eco-friendly.</p>
<p>The Energy Logic Symposium Series has attracted hundreds of business decision makers, IT and facility managers, CxOs and government officials across Asia since April, and will debut in Australia on July 1.</p>
<p>“The feedback we’ve had to date from the Asia tells us that companies are struggling to run their equipment-heavy data centres due to insufficient power, while having to meet emerging regulations from their governments to comply with energy saving regulations,” says Mark Deguara, National Product Manager, Emerson Network Power Australia.</p>
<p>“The $150 million energy saving plan by the NSW State government is a case in point,” says Deguara. “This is an opportunity for us as an industry to present a unified solution, that shows Australian companies how they can best meet these new demands on their business on one hand, and make significant operational savings on the other.”
The New South Wales Minister for Climate Change and the Environment, Verity Firth, launched her Energy Efficiency Strategy for the State last week, with targets for business to reduce emissions.</p>
<p>“A number of industries and businesses have been particularly proactive in embracing the opportunities that energy efficiency offers,” says Firth. “Innovative companies can help us make a real difference in tackling climate change in ways that make plenty of economic sense as well.”</p>
<p>David Scott, Managing Director, Emerson Network Power Australia, says that although the new regulations could initially seem daunting, local companies should be embracing the changes.</p>
<p>“I’ve heard of concerns over the cost of complying with increasingly stricter government regulations, but frameworks like Energy Logic can allay most of those fears by not only giving clear and decisive direction for energy cuts, but actually quantifying the savings in dollar terms for the business,” says Scott.</p>
<p>“The Energy Logic sequence can potentially save more than half of a data centre's energy load, which in practical terms can result in millions of dollars saved annually,” he adds. “Energy savings is no more a nice-to-have but a must-have, not only in terms of potential cost savings to business, but now, as a basic prerequisite for doing business."</p>
<p>Global partnerships, local impact
Emerson has called on its global partners to help maintain its Energy Logic momentum, and Australian symposium delegates will have the opportunity to interact with these industry experts to better understand the various facets that make up the Energy Logic equation.</p>
<p>“Power and cooling are major issues in data centres today,” says Dylan Morison, Business Development Manager, Australia and New Zealand, Cisco.</p>
<p>“Using the right network architecture allows you to offset a lot of the other pressure points in the data centre, which is why Energy Logic is so important for us because it takes a holistic look at the different parts of the data centre that affect energy consumption,” says Morison. “It’s not one or two factors that are causing the crisis; it’s everything from the network architecture to the cooling infrastructure that makes up the big picture.”</p>
<p>Stephen Hemsworth, Business Development Manager, Enterprise Systems Group, Dell Australia, says that the power challenges and requirements for the “green” data centre are forcing facilities and IT professionals to re-think how they approach designing their infrastructure.</p>
<p>“This starts at the application layer, moves to what systems are deployed, and finally how they can efficiently provide power and cooling to these systems," says Hemsworth.</p>
<p>"Server virtualisation and consolidation allows deployment onto the most power efficient platforms you can get. This not only reduces power consumption, it creates a data centre that simplifies IT. It is agile and can react quickly to business drivers creating strategic benefits and ultimately competitive advantage."</p>
