Ascential to buy Vality for $92M

Ascential Software has agreed to pay $US92 million in cash to acquire data-quality-management software maker Vality Technology.

Vality's Integrity suite of data-management software will be integrated into Ascential's DataStage family of data integration products upon the deal's close, expected in early April, the companies said on Tuesday.

Ascential, formerly a unit of Informix, became a standalone company last July when Informix sold its database business to IBM. Vality will be the second local business Ascential has bought since then to bolster its product portfolio. In November, it paid $46 million for Torrent Systems, a Massachusetts-based parallel processing technology developer.

Ascential, located in Westboro, Massachusetts, will keep open Vality's current headquarters in Boston, said Ascential president Pete Fiore. A "very small percentage" of layoffs will occur because of the acquisition, he said.
