Police to hunt parking offenders in cyberspace

The NSW Police Force has introduced cutting-edge technology designed to make parking fines harder to escape, but at least irate motorists will have the added convenience of being able to pay online. Tower Technology and Plexus Software have implemented the new workflow and imaging technology at the NSW Police Infringement Processing Bureau (IPB) in Maitland, creating 150 new jobs in the process. The Infringement Management Processing System will deal with an estimated 6,000 traffic tickets and 2,000 letters of correspondence every day. The resulting electronic images will be managed automatically by the system, improving the efficiency of fine collecting. Traditional methods of communicating with the IPB will remain but the new system allows frustrated drivers to pay fines online, or alternatively complain and offer unlikely excuses via e-mail. Initially concentrating on traffic penalties, the system could be used for speeding and red light offences in the future.
