University Demand Sees InterSystems Expand Campus Program

~ Strong growth in members as five more universities offer subjects incorporating InterSystems' CACHÉ post-relational database in 2005 ~

SYDNEY, February 15, 2005 -- InterSystems Corporation today announced that five more universities have joined its Campus Program, taking the number of Australian tertiary institutions taking advantage of its free software, training and industry collaboration scheme to six.

Sydney University, Murdoch University, The University of South Australia, Deakin University and The University of Western Sydney have all joined the Campus Program and will offer subjects incorporating InterSystems' CACHÉ in 2005. The University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) is already a member, part of a community of 210 universities participating in the program worldwide.

The leading database provider in healthcare and a significant player in other industry segments, InterSystems develops and markets the CACHÉ post-relational database and the Ensemble universal integration platform worldwide.

"As the limitations of the relational database are becoming more apparent and object-oriented development becomes the norm, educators are recognising the need for students to acquire knowledge and development skills in post-relational databases," said Denis Tebbutt, Managing Director for InterSystems in Australia.

"InterSystems firmly believes that the next generation of software developers and solutions integrators will need these skills for their careers to develop to their full potential," said Mr Tebbutt.

Membership of the Campus Program entitles students and academic staff at each University to free licenses of InterSystems' CACHÉ post-relational database for research or study purposes, plus training in the software.

The program will go off-campus as well. InterSystems will establish "CACHÉ Communities" in each city where a university joins the program and will host regular meetings where its technical staff and representatives of commercial software developers using CACHÉ and the end user community mingle to discuss software development and post-relational technologies.

"The aim of the Campus Program is to expose students and faculty to post-relational databases, but also to make sure skills in this technology are relevant to careers and research," said Mr Tebbutt. "That's why we think the CACHÉ Communities are so important. They give students the chance to meet the developers and other CACHÉ users which can offer them industry experience placements, or even full time work when they graduate. We want students to have a pathway to work, not just skills they have to sell by themselves."

This approach, he added, is already working. "Customers regularly phone us and ask how to contact students they have met at user group meetings. One customer, an Australian software developer, just hired a student that way. Now they want two more."

InterSystems also offers substantial discounts on licenses if member Universities or students choose to develop commercial products based on CACHÉ, or implement the software within the University.

The new relationships with the five Universities compliment InterSystems' ongoing donation to the ACS Foundation that sees it donate free software, textbooks and training valued at $1950 per student to all ACS Foundation scholarship holders. In 2004, 50 ACS Foundation scholarship holders took advantage of the InterSystems donation.
