ABS reports slight Web growth

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has collated the figures for the December quarter of 2000, revealing Australian Internet subscription grew at a modest rate over the period. Subscribers grew to 3.9 million, only slightly higher than the 3.8 million from the previous quarter.

The ABS discovered business and government subscribers were growing, while the number of household accounts and free Internet accounts have begun to fall.

At the end of December 2000, there were 696 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) supplying Internet access services, down 3 per cent from the previous quarter. The six largest ISPs still provide access to over 50 per cent of all Internet subscribers.

Of the 3.9 million Internet subscribers, 10 per cent were on a free Internet access plan, 66 per cent were on a monthly/quarterly/annual access plan and 21 per cent were on an hourly access plan.
