NETGEAR continues its leadership of the SMB market with fast, secure mobile networking

 • 20 May, 2008 11:07

“NETGEAR has always concentrated on designing products that meet the evolving demands of two markets: SMBs and consumers,” said NETGEAR’s Australian and New Zealand managing director, Ryan Parker.

“NETGEAR has become a market leader in the SMB segment because it provides a complete networking solution packed full of enterprise functionality, without sacrificing ease of use. This focus is particularly critical now as IT departments are being asked to do more with less, and the cost of servicing debt continues to rise.

NETGEAR (Nasdaq: NTGR) will showcase a range of products at the CeBIT 2008 show at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, May 20-22, which can help small-to-medium-sized businesses (SMBs) improve productivity and efficiency, secure the computer network and protect critical business data.

“While most SMBs understand the importance of network security, mobility and data back-up in supporting wider business objectives such as productivity and efficiency, if the equipment makes the network harder to manage, you will still have a negative impact on the bottom line.

“With this in mind, NETGEAR invests in making high-end functionality accessible to IT administrators in companies with staff from five to 200, and all of the appliances in NETGEAR’s ProSafe product family come with a lifetime warranty.”

Warren Manners, who joined NETGEAR last week as the ProSafe account manager for New South Wales and the ACT will attend CeBIT to educate visitors on the solutions which can help improve productivity, efficiency and security. Prior to joining NETGEAR, Manners worked for Engin for three years as a national dealer channel manager and distribution manager.

Products on Display

Solutions such as NETGEAR’s ReadyNAS network attached storage devices (NAS) provide up to four terabytes of space to store and back-up critical business data. The ReadyNAS units come in both desktop (ReadyNAS NV+) and rackmount (ReadyNAS 1100) formations with four bays containing hard disks that will automatically mirror data -- NETGEAR will have a selection of these devices on its CeBIT showcase [Stand F40, Hall 2].

ReadyNAS products deliver centralised, easy to manage storage that can operate in Windows, Macintosh or UNIX/Linux environments and do not require a costly investment in operating system licences or support staff. IT administrators can schedule automatic backups and the device will alert them instantly of any issues that occur. Later this year, NETGEAR will launch six-bay desktop NAS appliances (the ReadyNAS Pro) in Australia, which will offer up to six terabytes of storage capacity for larger businesses.

Also designed for larger businesses is NETGEAR’s ProSafe Smart Wireless Controller which gives IT administrators centralised control of up to 16 access points. The device is controlled via a web-based management tool called the ProSafe Control Centre to deliver a seamless wireless network with robust security. The device offers an integrated wired and wireless experience for employees.

One WFS709TP ProSafe Smart Wireless Controller will support up to 256 wireless users and IntelliFi Radio Management provides automatic self-configuration of all radio parameters including transmit power level, channel, load balancing and interference avoidance for a solid roaming wireless connection. For low latency applications such as VoIP (Voice over IP), the ProSafe Smart Wireless Controller delivers VoIP over wireless by providing support for call admission control, voice-aware fast roaming and strict over the air QoS to deliver mobile voice capabilities.

The WNDAP330 ProSafe 802.11n Dual Band Wireless Access Point has just shipped in Australia. The device supports laptops with the older 802.11a/b/g wireless standards, and the new faster, 802.11n standard. The dual-band wireless access point creates a wireless environment that is less prone to interference and more efficient, because it enables employees to connect to the Internet and server via two radio frequencies, 5GHz and 2.4GHz. Also, due to the use of two radio frequencies, there are a larger number of channels available to transport data around the network.

“The 5GHz radio frequency is not as prone to interference from adjacent wireless networks or devices such as microwaves and Bluetooth headsets which use the 2.4GHz frequency, and copes better with physical obstacles such as walls,” said Parker. “The 5GHz frequency has a larger number of non-overlapping channels which means employees can move around the office with their laptops and maintain their connections to the server or Internet.

“The 802.11n wireless standard is also better suited to keeping up with the demands of high-speed broadband and running server-based applications, so better supports employees who work from laptops and contractors that are hot-desking in larger organisations.”

Completing the total SMB networking solution with a wired networking device are two gigabit switches with static routing and enterprise functionality. Static routing helps communication among network devices in different VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks) and accelerates the movement of data around the network, improving staff productivity. The protocol is also far simpler for network managers to set up when compared with dynamic routing.

The GS724TR ProSafe 24-Port Gigabit Smart Switch and the GS748TR ProSafe 48-Port Gigabit Smart Switch with Static Routing are ideal for SMBs which use VoIP phone-calls and video-conferencing. The GS724TR and GS748TR will support a growing business, and its network, and have all the high-level features IT administrators need to simplify the management of the network at an SMB price-point.

NETGEAR will also display a device that supports SMBs with mobile workers by providing a secure link over the Internet to web-based applications and the corporate network -- a gateway which connects employees with the network wherever they are in the world. The FVS336G ProSafe Dual WAN Gigabit Firewall with SSL and IPsec enables branch offices to share information and gives employees remote access to all the files and applications they need to do their job effectively. The in-built firewall protects the computer network from viruses and hackers.

The FVS336G supports up to 25 employees wishing to access a network remotely at any one time. It provides two types of virtual private network (VPN) tunnels: Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Internet Protocol security (IPsec). IPsec VPN secures all data that travels between two points. When a computer is connected remotely via an IPSec VPN, the employee has the same access to the corporate network as if they were in the office. Whereas SSL VPNs give secure remote access to employees using only web-based applications, and also allow IT administrators to set access rules for each user, so employees only have access to the resources they require to do their job.
