Optical vendors unbowed by slow sales

Despite reports that carriers are slow to buy the latest optical networking gear, vendors arrayed a range of faster, more powerful switches and components at a recent optical fibre conference in the US.

Vendors such as Nortel Networks and Corvis bragged of new high-capacity and long-distance equipment that can deliver mind-boggling bandwidth, even though observers wonder how soon service providers will use them.

It's not clear that service providers see the need for such bandwidth, according to a report by research company Current Analysis. "Many carriers are watching capital now and may want to take a close look at how quickly they really need 40Gbps, and whether or not it is more effective to manage multiple 10Gbps wavelengths or a mixed 40Gbps solution," the report says.
