Niche distributor, GDB International, has been appointed the exclusive distributor for Cobalt Digital.
Cobalt produces a range of high-end SD-SDI/HD-SDI format converters. GDB sales and marketing manager, David Cooper, said the converters filled a gap in its product portfolio.
"All the vendors we represent complement one another by providing accessories around the prosumer camera space," he said. "We don't provide the camera, because there's little money to be made there, but there are substantial returns in accessories."
Cobalt Digital has had a presence in Australia previously but terminated the distribution arrangement, director of sales, Chris Shaw, said.
"We would rather not mention names due to any possible legal implications. Suffice to say that they only appeared interested in larger projects and did not understand how to seed the market with small orders to obtain manufacturer/product recognition," he said.
Although Australia was not a large market, Cobalt Digital's product range will fill a major need within the emerging HD market, Shaw said. It had chosen GDB because of the distributor's ability to work with other dealers and systems integrators.
"GDB already works exclusively with a number of manufacturers and we needed its expertise and distribution channel," Shaw said.
Cooper said take-up of HD-SDI technology is being driven by universities, schools, community television stations, church media groups, small production houses and documentary makers.
GDB will launch a range of marketing initiatives focused on installation dealers including direct user marketing and advertising, joint presentations and roadshows.
Cooper said GDB is actively looking for more vendors to fit into its prosumer portfolio.
