NETGEAR’s new switches deliver increased bandwidth management and productivity into the hands of SMBs

 • 18 March, 2008 13:35

NETGEAR (Nasdaq: NTGR) has released two products that increase the value of a small-to-medium-sized business network by improving network performance, which increases staff productivity.

Increasing the value of computer networks for small to medium sized business by designing products that can lead to improved staff productivity.

The Layer 2 Managed Gigabit Switches are the first NETGEAR switches to offer static routing and are available in 24- and 48-port configurations. Static routing helps communication between network devices in different VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks) and speeds up the movement of data around the network. The protocol is also far simpler for network managers to set-up when compared with dynamic routing.

The 24-Port GSM7224R ProSafe Switch and the 48-Port GSM7248R ProSafe Switch are ideal for high-performance work-groups at the edge of the network, or as a backbone for fast Ethernet switches and high-speed servers in demanding small-to-medium-sized networks.

To further enhance the plug-and-play usability of these appliances, NETGEAR has designed a new web-based management Graphical User Interface (GUI) called ProSafe Control Centre. The GUI enables IT administrators to easily configure and optimise network performance, on-site and remotely, to suit the changing demands of their networks.

The full set of Layer 2 management features provide a secure network foundation that can cope with the demands of simultaneous data, wireless, video and IP Communications -- services that can slow network throughput and response time. The Layer 2 management features enable IT administrators to optimise bandwidth, security and performance to ensure the network is keeping up with demand. The GSM7224R and GSM7248R will interoperate with any SNMP-based (Simple Network Management Protocol) management software, including NETGEAR’s ProSafe Network Management Software (NMS100).

Additional advanced features of the two new static routing switches include:
· Comprehensive remote administration capabilities.
· In-built testing capability to locate cable-related network problems.
· Support of up to 512 VLANs.
· DiffServ prioritisation protocol support -- a Quality of Service protocol that helps maintain voice quality even when network traffic is heavy.
· Network storm protection from broadcast, multicast and unicast traffic -- to avoid network meltdowns.
· Four combination Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) Gigabit interfaces -- to provide flexible fibre connectivity.
· Switching bandwidth of 48 Gigabits per second (full duplex) in the GSM7224R.
· Switching bandwidth of 96 Gigabits per second (full duplex) in the GSM7248R.

The NETGEAR GSM7224R ProSafe 24-Port Gigabit L2 Managed Switch with Static Routing (RRP: $1,349) and GSM7248R ProSafe 48-Port Gigabit L2 Managed Switch with Static Routing (RRP: $2,499) are now available from NETGEAR’s value-added resellers. Backed by 24x7 technical support, they come with NETGEAR’s ProSafe lifetime warranty.
