The increasing pressure to do away with legacy connections such as serial and parallel ports can be a problem for organisations. Many users, particularly in engineering verticals, still have a strong investment in peripherals that will only connect via legacy ports. Targus has released a new line of USB adapters designed to help circumvent this issue. The USB to serial PA088U is a USB 1.1-compliant adapter that helps connect RS232 port devices such as modems, digital cameras, barcode readers and PDA cradles. The USB to parallel PA096U is designed to connect devices such as printers and features a 183-centimetre cable.
Both adapters retail for $59.95. Targus has also introduced the Mobile MiniPort PA082U, an adapter that connects USB to both parallel and serial ports. It carries a retail price of $99.95. The USB to Ethernet PA084U is compatible with most networking equipment and meets IEEE Ethernet standards. The adapter is expected to retail for $99.95. All three devices are covered by a 12-month warranty and are available immediately.
