Virtualisation highly regarded in Asia/Pacific

CIO's like the idea, but cool on the reality

Forty-eight per cent of CIOs and top IT executives in the Asia/Pacific region rated management of their virtual server environment as a critical or high IT priority, yet only 42 per cent thought their companies were doing an effective job in this important area, according to a recent study of virtualisation management conducted for CA. The study surveyed 300 CIOs and top IT executives from the APAC, US, and EMEA regions.

One-third of the overall respondents were from APAC enterprises, and 75 per cent of APAC respondents were from Australia.

Fifty-seven per cent of the APAC respondents rated the importance of centralising the management of multi-platform virtualised or physical environments as critical or very important.

Another key finding was that 55 per cent of the APAC respondents were using multiple platforms or vendors for server virtualisation management, while 30 per cent were standardised on one platform.

According to Michael Warrilow, senior analyst at Hydrasight, "Management is undoubtedly the new battleground in virtualisation.

"Before 2010, Hydrasight believes, the focus will shift from hypervisors toward unlocking the business value of a more dynamic IT environment. Enterprises in Asia/Pacific must therefore ensure they prepare for heterogeneous IT management of their virtualised environments".

It was found that in the APAC region the top mission-critical business services to be used in virtual environments were customer service, accounting/finance, data analytics, IT infrastructure management, application development, and compliance.

"The study has shown a significant need for enterprises in APAC to measure and document their return on investment and increased productivity," said Simon Barnier, director of CA business service management.
