Review: Software push the WAN performance envelope

Version 1.0 of the software client brings huge performance gains to CIFS file transfers, though HTTPS and NFS are not supported; Version 4.1 of the site-to-site solution shows overall performance improvement over Version 3.0, while adding key features, including HTTPS support

Riverbed Steelhead Mobile 1.0.2

Riverbed Technology, riverbed.com
Overall score: Excellent 8.8/10
Performance: 9/10
Protocol support: 8/10
Reporting: 9/10
Setup: 9/10
Value: 9/10

Cost: US$12,995 for Steelhead Mobile Controller and 30 concurrent client licenses; additional concurrent licenses US$87 each

Platforms: Any TCP/IP network; client available for Windows 2000, XP, and Vista only

Bottom Line: Steelhead Mobile is an excellent way for remote users and smaller branch office users to get better WAN performance when accessing data from the corporate datacenter. Our tests showed huge performance increases for CIFS communications and marked speed boosts in other TCP-based traffic. Central management and reporting are excellent. On the downside, central management comes at additional cost, and NFS file shares and encrypted traffic including SSL are not supported.
