LINUXWORLD: Caldera to ship Web-based management system

Looking to boost its Web services strategy, Caldera International said that it will deliver next month version 1.1 of its Volution Manager, a Web-based management and administration system that supports the best-selling versions of Linux.

The updated release, which now supports all the more popular versions of Linux, is primarily designed to help system administrators more easily scale their existing resources, and roll out Web services and other deployments more cost effectively, company officials said here Wednesday at the LinuxWorld conference.

Some of the new features include the ability to manage multiple platforms from one interface, a new install option that simplifies reviews, evaluations and deployments, a status and diagnostics features to reduce troubleshooting time, and tighter integration with Volution Online, which provides an Internet-based software management service.

Caldera has also integrated version 1.1 with Compaq Computer Corp.'s Insight Manager to offer a stronger management solution for both Linux and Caldera Unix products on Compaq's server hardware.

Volution Manager 1.1 will be priced at US$2,995 for a server plus 10 client licenses.

Also at LinuxWorld, Caldera announced the availability of its OpenLinux Workstation 3.1.1 and OpenLinux Server 3.1.1Both versions feature version 2.4.13 of the Linux kernel, support for the KDED 2.2.1 graphical interface, and improved support for working with Caldera's Volution Messaging Server and Volution Manager 1.1The OpenLinux Server includes 60 days of e-mail installation support and six months of Volution Online software maintenance priced at $249. The Workstation version also includes 60 days of e-mail installation support and 60 days of Volution Online maintenance for $99.
