Symantec Awarded US$21 Million In Judgments Against Counterfeit Software Piracy Rings

Ruling Pertains To November 2006 Civil Suits Filed Against ANYI, SILI Inc. and Yee Sha

SYDNEY, Australia – 20 December 2007 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced that it was awarded US$21 million in damages against a large network of distributors selling counterfeit Symantec software.

The judgments were handed down by the United States District Court for the Central District of California in Los Angeles, CA in favour of Symantec against ANYI, SILI Inc., Mark Ma, Mike Lee, John Zhang, Yee Sha, and related defendants.

“Our customers are the real winners as a result of this case,” said Scott Minden, director, Symantec Legal department. “A judgment like this is a crippling blow against these particular syndicates and will drive them even further underground, making it more difficult for them to sell directly to unsuspecting users. It complicates their ability to operate behind the guise as legitimate businesses.”

In civil cases filed in November 2006, Symantec included claims alleging that ANYI, SILI, Yee Sha, and their affiliates engaged in trademark infringement, copyright infringement, fraud, unfair competition, and false advertising. Symantec’s investigations into these piracy rings coincided with and supported other investigations initiated by various law enforcement agencies such as the FBI and the Chinese Ministry of Public Security, ultimately leading to the arrest of Mark Ma in Shenzhen by Chinese authorities in July 2007.

“These results reflect our overall efforts to attack software piracy on a global basis,” said Minden. “In addition to our efforts in the U.S. and Asia, we routinely conduct investigations and take enforcement actions throughout Europe, which are yielding measurable results for protecting our customers against the security dangers posed by pirated software.” About Symantec
