Acterna Delivers FTTx Test Gear to Major U.S. Service Provider - Acterna MTS-5100e Designed for OTDR Applications that Help Maintain Reliable Broadband Access

 • 22 February, 2005 11:49

Hong Kong: Tuesday, February 22 2005 – Acterna, the largest provider of test and management solutions to telecommunications network operators, today announced that the Acterna MTS-5100e handheld field tester has been selected as the sole optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) tester for fiber-to-the-x (FTTx) cable maintenance by one of the largest communications service providers in the United States. Acterna offers one of the industry’s most comprehensive network test and management portfolios addressing all the needs of service providers delivering the triple play of voice, video (IP and RF) and data delivered over FTTx architectures. This portfolio includes physical plant installation/qualification (fiber optic and copper), access technology provisioning (Ethernet and DSL), service turn-up and ongoing service assurance.

According to a recent industry report, the number of U.S. homes connected to an FTTP network more than doubled this year, and the number of homes passed by FTTP more than quadrupled to nearly one million. The same report projects that the number of U.S. homes connected to FTTP will increase 400 percent to nearly 600,000 next year.

Offering the best price/performance combination, the MTS-5100e also proved itself in the field, where rugged use is often an element of FTTx deployment. The tester offers a 15 second start-up for fast testing; an impressive outside/inside 21.3-cm color screen with views at any angle, even in challenging light conditions such as bright sunlight; and the industry’s strongest combination of ruggedness and portability, weighing 3.5 kilograms and resistant to a 1 meter drop. It is ideally fitted to FTTx deployment, with its easy-to-use one button fault locator mode that can quickly locate breaks in the fiber, automatic traffic detection that does not disrupt service, high-performance testing with a 0.1 second real time mode, four centimeter resolution, and 128,000 acquisition points to precisely locate breaks. Acterna is specifically providing an impressive, cost effective 1310/1550nm OTDR module for this application, enabling analysis of short fiber links – the primary element in FTTx networks.

“Whatever the requirements, we can match exactly what our customer needs, without compromising price, performance, size or weight,” said Enzo di Luigi, general manager for Acterna’s Fiber Optics and Systems. “The experience gained from the extensive global installed base of our MTS-5000 series also helps reduce procurement costs, accelerates network deployment and provides our customers with a solid foundation of testers when they roll out new services such as FTTx.”

About Acterna’s MTS Family of Products

The development of Acterna’s platform of MTS testers is based on the company’s extensive experience in the field, and was designed as the ideal optical network field tester based on input from field technicians, service providers and equipment manufacturers worldwide.
