NewSat appoints Chris North as new Director

 • 08 January, 2008 14:31

NewSat Limited (ASX:NWT) Board have announced the appointment of Chris North as non-executive director of the company.

The appointment comes at a time when NewSat has recently landed a major Western Australian Government and DCITA contract for broadband services in the Kimberleys and has announced its submission to the Federal Government’s Regional Telecommunications Independent Review Committee for a dollar for dollar contribution to a private public partnership raising $400million to launch a fully Australian-owned and operated geostationary communications satellite.

Mr North’s extensive experience in developing technology companies such as Unwired Ltd is an excellent skill-set fit with the current NewSat Board comprising John Walker Chairman, Adrian Ballintine NewSat CEO and Chuck Ellison.

“I am delighted to join the Board of NewSat Limited at such an exciting time in the company’s development and the broadband industry’s evolution,” said Mr North.

“NewSat has an impeccable track record of delivering satellite services to remote and rural Australia. Its technical excellence is being enhanced through further investment in state-of-the-art technology and innovative retailing initiatives in 2008.

“I fully endorse the NewSat Board’s recently announced and much needed initiative to pursue the launch of a fully Australia-based and Australian owned geostationary communications satellite.

“This will deliver major benefits to the national interest offering new and secure service capability to meet our international, domestic and defence communications needs. It will round out the service offering of NewSat and consolidate its position as a major force in the worldwide satellite business.”

Chris North’s background includes co-founding Unwired Limited in 1997. Mr North is also the founder and Managing Director of Wattle Park Partners Pty Ltd, a Canberra-based consultancy that provides strategic, regulatory, economic and technical advice and services in all aspects of telecommunications and the media and founding Director of the WiMAX Spectrum Owners’ Alliance (WiSOA).

Over the past 15 years Mr North's company has undertaken projects for major telecommunications and broadcasting companies, governments and regulatory agencies in Australia, the USA, Europe and Asia.

Prior to establishing Wattle Park Partners Mr North was a senior career executive with the Australian Government for 25 years, holding key positions in a range of Government Departments and Federal Ministers' offices.

He was the chief-of-staff of two Federal Government Ministers and a central player in the Australian reform of telecommunications and broadcasting regulation in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

“We welcome Chris’ talents and experience to the NewSat Board and are certain his expertise in government, regulation and telecommunications will prove to be a substantial asset to NewSat, particularly at this stage when we are growing significantly in these areas and plan to concentrate on expanding and consolidating this business sector growth,” said NewSat Chairman, Mr John Walker.

Australia’s leading satellite services provider has flagged to shareholders and the investor market for some months the prospect of additional new directors to the Board. Mr North’s appointment strengthens the company’s spread of talent at the top and provisions the company starting in Q3 and 4 of the financial year, and well into the future.
