Dell Australia has canned any plans it may have had of entering the hosting business in Australia, following the "mild" success of its DellHost business in the US.
Web hosting in Australia is better left in the hands of its well established ISPs, says Dell Australia spokesman Rob Small.
"The Australian market is already well serviced through the capabilities of its ISPs and should continue to be maintained by them," Small said. "Dell is not an ISP. If you look at the capabilities of ISPs in this side of the business, it is best left to them," he said.
While Dell's Internet 'presence provider' service, DellHost, has experienced moderate success since its launch in the US two years ago, a general lack of interest from SMEs in conducting business online has left Dell hesitant about extending its service worldwide.
"DellHost came about in the height of the dotcom era, when it was hoped all business would move onto the Internet," said Small. "The DellHost service, although mildly successful in the States, hasn't been so successful that Dell felt it necessary to expand the service globally."
Australia's smaller market potential compared to the US was another reason for the decision not to release DellHost locally, he added.
Despite Dell's uncertainty, Intel, whose own unique range of web hosting services were launched in Australia two years ago, is confident demand for its services will continue to grow.
Director of sales for Intel online services Asia-Pacific, Ben Joseph, said Australia's interest in the company's web hosting services surpasses that of other countries in the region. Intel's latest fully-managed stack, which includes network and hardware facilities as well as managed operating systems and applications, was released in Australia last month.
