Nortel Launches Australia’s Broadest Portfolio Of Unified Communications Solutions For Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007

 • 13 November, 2007 11:42

Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT] has launched Australia’s broadest portfolio of Unified Communications solutions for Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS) 2007 at the official OCS launch events in Sydney and Melbourne this week.

The new solutions enable people to connect, communicate and collaborate seamlessly using existing desktop productivity applications to improve business performance. Nortel is the only IP-PBX manufacturer to offer native integration to OCS 2007 – which means that no third-party gateways or applications are required to support OCS on Nortel’s hardware. Nortel customers are therefore assured of a direct upgrade path to Unified Communications using their existing Nortel Communications Server equipment.

“Our relationship with Microsoft has been one of the most successful alliances in Nortel’s history,” says Kirsten Gilbertson, Nortel and Microsoft Innovative Communications Alliance Lead, Asia, Nortel. “We are miles ahead of our competitors in terms of the depth of our relationship with Microsoft. In just over a year, our alliance has resulted in over 300 global customer wins for 900,000 licenses – in a market that is in its very early adoption stages. I would classify that as an extremely successful start.”

Among those wins is Australian construction giant Mirvac, one of several high-profile customers chosen to present its experience of migrating to a joint Nortel and Microsoft Unified Communications solution at the launch event. Mirvac’s solution includes a completely converged voice and data network running on Nortel network hardware and using Microsoft’s Live Communication Server 2007 platform to give its users additional functionality such as presence-enabled calling direct from the desktop.

“Microsoft’s broad partner ecosystem continues to deliver on the vision of Unified Communications and create value for Australian customers,” says Oscar Trimboli, Director, Unified Communications, Microsoft Australia. “Through the ongoing Innovative Communications Alliance, Nortel has proven it has the leading-edge skills, experience and capacity to drive further customer successes locally.”

Planned for availability in the first quarter of 2008, Nortel will offer the following Microsoft interoperable solutions:

· Nortel Converged Office integrates the comprehensive telephony feature set of Nortel’s IP-PBX with OCS 2007. The solution scales to tens of thousands of users, supports business’s existing internal dial plans, and provides capabilities that aren’t available with less functional gateway solutions. Converged Office uniquely enables Office Communicator as the single end-user interface to perform all Unified Communications functions such as VoIP soft client, instant messaging, presence, conferencing and performing remote call control of any desk phone connected to a Nortel IP-PBX.

· Nortel Multimedia Conferencing 5.0 is a reservationless, customer premise audio/video solution that provides subscribers with ubiquitous access to an ’always on‘ conferencing resource. Nortel offers users the ability to dial-in to a conference from anywhere, and from any device. The integration of Nortel’s Multimedia Conferencing with OCS 2007 can support a mix of attendee types including on premise users with desktop clients, analog phones, digital or IP phones as well as partners, customers and remote callers. The joint conferencing solution enables an audio conference to seamlessly convert into a desktop video conference.

· The Nortel UC Integrated Branch combines Microsoft Mediation functionality into the Nortel Secure Router 4134. The platform simplifies branch office networking by integrating WAN routing, Ethernet switching, security and toll quality VoIP into a single modular, cost effective platform that delivers up to seven times the performance of competing solutions. The integration of Microsoft Mediation, the first of its kind on an integrated branch platform, will help enable enterprises deploying OCS 2007 to seamlessly extend Unified Communications functionality into the branch office with better manageability and quality of experience than competing solutions.

· Nortel application switches and accelerators are key components of Nortel’s Business Optimised Networking portfolio, aimed at delivering a simplified and optimised network infrastructure to support Unified Communications solutions. Nortel Application Switches provide intelligent load balancing that allows superior scalability and business continuity for OCS 2007. Nortel Application Accelerators are optimised for Microsoft SharePoint and Outlook Web Access to improve application response time by up to 30 times.

LG-Nortel, the LG Electronics and Nortel joint venture, also unveiled its LG-Nortel IP Phone 8500 series Unified Communications devices. Optimised for use with OCS 2007 and Office Communicator 2007, the devices allow easy access to sophisticated Unified Communications features such as VoIP, directory dialing, calendar integration, call diversion and presence checking. They also support the ability to securely access user contacts, calendars, voice mail and call logs.
