Fujitsu develops brighter touch panel screenTwo of Fujitsu's subsidiaries have jointly developed a touch screen with an improved light transparency ratio, enabling it to provide a brighter screen for mobile devices such as PDAs. The new screen from Fujitsu Laboratories and Fujitsu Components is 0.7 millimetres thick and has a light transparency ratio of 98 per cent, compared to a conventional touch screen's ratio of between 82 and 86 per cent, the companies said. The product is expected to be commercialised by the second half of next year, they said.

Handspring's Treo upgrade

Handspring has released its GPRS software upgrade for Treo customers in Australia and New Zealand. This user-installable software upgrade improves the connection to the GPRS network for the Treo 180, 180g and Treo 270 devices. With the upgrade, Treo will automatically configure for data access, doing away with the need for manual configurations or an ISP. The upgrade will also enhance applications such as SMS, so Web pages can be launched, phone numbers dialled and e-mails addressed by simply tapping the corresponding information that arrives in a text message. There are keyboard hints built in to the phone application. Current Treo 180, 180g and 270 owners can download this software at no additional cost from www.handspring.com/au/gprs.
