Western Power, a company most people associate with electricity and not high-speed broadband Internet, has teamed up with Marconi to deliver just that.
Western Power is piloting a project with 200 homes and small businesses to provide residents with high-speed Web access and video streaming ultimately via a twisted copper pair.
Marconi is committing its Deep Fibre Switched Digital Broadband (DF-SDB) networking equipment technology to the project, as well as engineering expertise.
The project also coincides with a joint State Government and Western Power program to replace Perth's power poles and overhead distribution lines with underground power, preventing problems caused by coastal salt corrosion and tree branches. At the same time as aerial power connections to homes are replaced by underground cables, Western Power will install conduits and optical fibre.
The twelve-month service pilot is due to commence in February 2002. The potential full rollout for Western Power could pass 300,000 homes within five to ten years.
