Innovative, scalable solution reduces DSL maintenance and operational costs

Hong Kong: Monday, May 24 2004 -- Acterna, the largest provider of test and network management solutions to telecommunications network operators, today announced the release of the North American version of the industry's most cost-effective and complete DSL test solution. A combination of Acterna's unique patented technology in its DSL Test Head (QT-200) and the scalable architecture of the Acterna Quality Test Management System (QMS Test OS), the solution optimizes the entire DSL services test process - from installation and provisioning to trouble shooting and service assurance.

The Acterna DSL test solution is a Web-based, open solution both in terms of standards (UNIX / Linux, XML, web based, ETSI, ANSI, etc.) as well as emerging technologies and customer needs (Voice over IP, VDSL, ADSL2). The solution integrates copper tests (narrowband and wideband) as well as service tests. As a result, tests can be performed to address both customer premise and DSL network (DSLAM, ATM backbone, BAS, Radius Servers, and ISPs) issues. The Acterna DSL test solution enables more efficient customer call management for network operators, saves days in mean time to repair (MTTR) and eliminates the need to deploy technicians to end-user locations to identify faults. Released for European and Asia Pacific markets, the solution is immediately available.

"Because of its open architecture, Acterna's DSL test solution provides an intelligent and flexible solution that is interoperable with the industry's leading DSL equipment and offers carriers unique technical innovations, a small footprint and ease of use," said Enzo di Luigi, general manager for Acterna's Fiber Optics and Systems. "Carriers will save considerable operational costs in delivering ADSL and G.SHDSL services. Using the numerous features of the Acterna DSL test solution, they can significantly reduce the number of trouble tickets by identifying correctly the source of the fault (ISP, end user or carrier), quickly fixing network problems and reducing the number of handoffs to the field."

Due to its small footprint, no additional rack space is required for the test solution -- it can be installed in the customer's existing racks, saving additional costs. Carriers may also use the Acterna DSL test solution to streamline their provisioning process and accelerate revenue recognition of new services delivered. This can eliminate time-consuming processes for field technicians by scheduling automated tests and reports.
