IDT say HaiVision to ANZ resellers

Audio-visual importer pushing video-over IP to resellers

NSW-based audio-visual importer Image Design Technology (IDT) has been named the exclusive distributor for HaiVision video-over IP boxes in Australia and New Zealand.

IDT marketing manager, Warwick Maver, said the distributor sees video-over IP networking as having "strong growth" potential and believes HaiVision has the best product in that area.

"People want to be able to do [video-over IP]. It's certainly something people are talking about," Maver said. "Being able to transport high quality audio and video over IP networks makes distance virtually a non-issue."

Maver said IDT was still mulling over the specifics of its channel strategy across Australia and New Zealand, but the distributor was certainly seeking "three or four" resellers in each state. HaiVision is based in Canada.

Probably, about half would hail from the audio-visual channel and half from the IT channel, he said.

IDT said demand existed for video-over IP in education, defence and telemedicine.

"Universities are the strongest, I'd say, so far," Maver said.

He said video-over IP was used for podcasting of lectures and similar. Anywhere universities needed to communicate remotely - whether for remote, e-learning applications or straightforward transmission of lectures -- could potentially harness the technology.

Boardroom video-conferencing could also use HaiVision gear, which promised DVD-quality video with low latency via its Hai200, Hai300, Hai500 and Hai1000 series boxes, he said.

"The Hai500 quotes 80-90ms for MPEG2 encoding. The Hai1000 quotes 120ms for MPEG-4 encoding of HD signals," he said. Maver said rival brands in the market included Tandberg and Envivio.

IDT also distributes gear from the likes of Avitech, Calypso Control Systems, InFocus, NEC and Pioneer.
